Saw this on the Maine municipal association site under new laws for MMJ.
"Patients may designate multiple primary caregivers rather than only one caregiver."
How can a patient do this if they are only given 1 designation card?

When the new laws come into effect in November, a cardholder can buy from any licensed dispensary or caregiver...designations are no longer...caregivers can service as many cardholders as they can with no more than 30 plants, instead of registering patients you’ll register for a block of 6 plants....

I wonder how this will work If I prefer to grow some of my own, but occasionally buy from a caregiver or dispensary? Would I be able to grow 6 plants and also purchase if I need to?

I believe that is why things changed...you can grow and buy if needed...the record keeping that comes with the new laws is quite detailed and covers from harvest to sale...
