Is a 1000w 2.5x hotter than a 400w?

Is the heat output equal to the watt for HPS lights?

600w is 150% hotter than 400w?

1000w is 250% hotter than 400w?

Wow. I dunno, but I want to. Subbing this in case someone out there smarter than me can break it down for us! Overall, if heat is an issue, get a cooled hood IMHO.

of course not thats crazy. The 1000 is about 15-20% warmer, eg the 400 runs at 25 and the 1000 runs at 30

First time I ran a 1k was in a walk in closet with no air cooling. That closet was in the 90's with the door open, them bitches will get hot if you let them!

That depends on you definition of "hot".

Lets say that ambient temperature is 75 degrees. A 400w light may run at 100 degrees. 25 degrees above ambient. A 1000w light may run at 137.50 which is 67.5 degrees above ambient temperature.

I made these numbers up, but you see what I'm getting at. The bulb doesn't have to be twice as hot to give you twice the problem.

So I can use the heat gain from the 400w to calculate (roughly but close) the temp rise I'd get form a 600w or 1000w?

how can I calculate the temp rise I'd get going from a 400w to a 1000w hps?

If I'm rising 2.5F over ambient now, with a 400w. And a 1000w is 2.5x more heat -- then I should only see ~6.3 rise with the 1000w?


I can't return it, so I want to get it right...

I'm going to guess you will get a lot more heat than 6.3 degrees from the 1kw. Get a dimmable ballast and make your life easier.

if you're growing in a closet or another closed space consider led. no heat. period.
