After about 2 years of use I have noticed that 400W HPs is not as bright as it used to be. i remember it being a very strong orange colour, but now is a lighter, paler whitish light.

Could the black marks on the bulb have anything to do with this?

depending on the size .....i kno my 400 wat high output is suppose to be changed every 12 months for maximum results. the reason is, is because HID lights decrease in lumen output over the life of the lamp. its usually 18 for HPS and 12 for MH.

Lol its not about when the bulb dies its about the bulbs after time losse alot of lumens
all shop should tell you this .
E.G....A 400w Hps bulb has around 52,000 but there are bulb which are better but not all.
after around 6 months maybe earlyer it can losse lumens fast so if you though your first plants got more than your next then you might know why.
AND ITS 2-3 harvest with most Hps bulbs

I realize that you lose lumens and it's not about when it dies, but a bulb dying in your room could throw everything into an unwanted dark cycle and thats gonna fuck more shit up than lost lumens
