Is my tap water bad?

I'm starting a aeroponics grow and just got all my nutes, ph+ and -, and finally a ph/ppm combo pen. Checked the water out of my tap and it's reading 8.1 ph.

Is this normal?

Normal for tap water yes....You need to get it down to about 6.5

Measure after mixing up your nutes because a good number of nutes actually lowers PH.

Alrighty, but what if my PPM is like in the 500-600 range? What the hell are they putting in our tap water?

Not in the water as much as the water lines they travel thru. Been down there a loooong time in all probability. Lots of mineral deposits etc. Also municipal water supplies vary from day to day from hour to hour. Rain, usage a buncha things go into the exact quality of your tap water at any given time.

Mine is way high like that.... I killed a few plants using it. I got a portable RO machine... it was only about $150

You can use cheap distilled water until you get a meter.... it's like 97 cents a gallon.

just use rain water..... when ever it rains, snows, sleet, hails..... put something outside to catch it.... and put the water in a couple of 2 liter/ 3 liter soda bottles.... now you have perfect water....and its FREE.... and most importantly... no PH headaches and its FREE

I'm not sure where you got that idea. Rain water will most likely still need to be PH corrected for hydro grows as the PH is lower for hydro.

I measured my rain water... it was around 6.5 - 6.7..... hydro should be around 5.7 - 5.8
. The OP said he is growing hydro ;)

Whats in your water?

Allot of bad crap, like fluoride which is the main ingredient in Rat poison, yea you heard Rat poison. Its waste from making Aluminum.

sheesh, i can't shell out $150-200 right now on an RO machine, and it like never rains in SoCal.

What if I got one of those Brita water filters and ran my water through that first?

And yes, I'm doing Hydro (Aeroponics to be exact, trying to emulate StrinkBud's success) I'm keepin the PH in the 5.8's for cloning right now. This is my first grow ever, so I'm learning as I go.
