If you read it cover to cover and implement his techniques you will DRAMATICALLY INCREASE your chances of success. From what Ive heard and based on the research Ive done the most common reasons people fail at growing is from being uninformed, unprepared and under-equipped. I would also recommend that you do a search for DIY CFL grow light fixtures, you'd be surprised what you can build with a few bucks and a trip to the hardware store, here's an example of one that I built using a piece of furnace piping and two double socket outlets:
