Is some stretch desireable?

Alright I used to think the same thing, but I swear if you feed them right during flowering they will fill in! I'll snap a pic of a lady later you'll see what I mean, when the buds reach the other ones on the top they tend to just pop on the side like foxtail buds its kind of crazy but true !

Yeah, I was thinking that maybe I just haven't observed bud development enough. Kind of like topping and training. A person has to do it and pay attention to really know how it works.

Well don't knock it till' you try it lol and just try all different kinds of things and you'll end up with much more knockledge !
I do. I pot up my plants about four weeks before they go into flower so roots expand, then I desire 2x stretch so I can further LST and fill out my flower tent.
I run a 400w for flower, so that stretch gives me room for bending and in the end, light penetration down low.

I like a little stretch. Some I want to stretch alot. I don't like the plant to stay so compact that it creates airflow problems. Definitely want stretch on a scrog. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Indoor stretch would be undesirable because of height constraints + it could stop artificial light from hitting the lower limbs.
Outdoor you should just let it grow how it wants to grow. Plants been growing itself for thousands of years i'm sure it doesn't need any help.
