If you have an HPS, I think they are only supposed to be hung horizontally. That is unless you get one specifically for vertical mounting. The people talking about putting the light on the sides of the plant, are usually talking about CFL or fluorescent.

since you used the term bulbs plural i assume you are talking about floro light, in which case you definately want some side light, especially in flowerr. just hanging cfls or tubes above the plant isn't going to get much growth out of the lower stuff. depending on the setup that might be what the grower wants.

i was asking more so about HPS lights but this is intersting stuff too... u say u definalty need side light in flower, where would u do this side lighting.... like on the outside of the tables plant height?

I feel like the plant should be in something like a tanning bed. Any light will help it is what I have come to learn. light coming from beneath, to the side, and top all will affect different parts. More light. More yield. Light around the bottom will get places that are normally just taking up space if you had the top.... but maybe I am wrong.

Indeed, but you have to be careful, especially in veg; your plants will stretch TOWARDS the light. In a ScrOG, for instance, you really don't want the plant growing downward, so it would be detrimental to place lights beneath the canopy. In a SOG as well, or else the plants' canopies will interfere with each other.
