is there a difference between topping and low stress training a plant?

im a bit confused as what the difference is.

my clones seem to be just growing from the top and the bottom of the plant is going really slow.

do i take off the newly grow part at the top or tie it down?

yes there is a huge difference. Just do a search for each of them and you will get a lot more detailed information.

Basically the biggest difference is topping requires you to actually cut the plant, while low stress training requires you to just tie down the plant with some string.

Both are used to produce more colas on the plant.

I usually don't LST or top my plants until they are at least a month old.

I decided to top mine because I only visit my spot once a week and don't feel like constantly adjusting the tie downs. I just waited till my plants had like 8 nodes and then I topped the main stem above the 5th node. Seems to have worked well for me...

k thanks. the tops of my clones are just growing faster than the bottom so its in need of lst.

there no way near bushy, there skinny with bushy tops.

Neither topping or lst can be called "the best", they each have certain benefits and advantages over each other. Whats the best? using them together in combination with one another to compliment each others strengths/benefits.

i do want to top the plants but i think its to early to be doing this? should i lst them first to get them bushy, then think about topping?

what kind of bulb and watt? how big is the plant? after the 4rth true node you want to fim it and then start lsting those tops and then lst the tops that the previous lst made and then lst those new tops till your horizontal area is ful. then you flip to 12/12 and you let all those top colas shoot up towards your lights filling the vertical space as well. You'll need to be able to move your light up and down w/o too much hassle cuz you'll want to keep the light as close to the tops as possible without burning them, some people like to use a screen for tying the plants tops too, its refered to as a screen of green in that case, I dont need a screen myself anymore but it might make it a bit easier for you the first couple times. I think you should research scrog and try it out.

600w hps bulb. the plant is around 4 maybe 5 inches i think.

so once i have lst'd the plant and its bushy, top the plant and switch to 12/12?

ive got eazi rollers so moving the light is easy.

i will take some pictures later on when i put my new bulb in. will you have a look at them and let me know what to do next?

nah, after the first 4-8 new colas from fimming(do you know what fimming is?) I dont really prune for new colas too often, lst doesnt hurt the plant and makes it more manageable and you can keep the canopy at the same height meaning the tops are all getting optimal lighting and your not wasting any of it almost, when i prune I'll tie down the 2 new growth shoots after they emerge and grow a bit. I keep canopy at the same height till flower, that way they all get the hormone that tells a growth shoot its the main one instead of only the highest parts of the plants so you'll get a canopy of awesome big solid top cola nugs..

right so put netting accross the area? how far up?

when the plant starts to grow through, i tie it back down until the area is all even?

then take it off when flowering?

ok so im going to grow 9 plants in 11litre pots under a canopy. I have a 600w hps cool tube and the tent is 4ftx4ft (2meters in height), which works out at 16sq ft?

The reason I have gone for 9 is because when there becomes a 'sea of green' watering may start to become a pain in the arse at the back of tent. With 9 I should just about manage.

Im looking forward to growing this way and cant wait to see the results. The majority of the sea will be blue cheese and the odd waves will be Northen Lights.

Theres a really good thread on a rival forum if anyone wants to read it http://forum.grasscity.com/plant-training/48363-scrog-method.html

Does everything I have said make sense?

Can you see any problems I may come accross or anything I have forgot about?

Thanks.

you dont need to take the screen off, just let the growth points shoot through the screen instead of pushing them back under when its flower time. 9 sounds fine, I like less bigger plants but thats just my preference..

ok kewl.

so i dont need to do any trimming of the leaves underneath the screen do i?

as long as the bud growth are pointing through, thats the main thing?

does between a foot and 2 feet sound about right for the height of the netting?

do i flower when the whole area is covered?

do i top the plants just before im ready to flower or during flower?
