Ivor's first grow journal: Purple Haze

Hello everyone!

I am a beginner grower, this is my second ever grow, first time indoors. I don't know what I'm doing but trying to learn! I'm open to advice and constructive input.

This grow was started early last month; the seeds went into soil after germination on 09/05/22.

Lots of my photos thus far are with lights on but some are with lights off (especially when I'm trying to diagnose any issues).

Setup:

• Lung room: ~10'x12'
  • homelabs 1500 sq.ft. dehumidifier
  • Whynter Elite ARC-122DHP 12000 BTU Portable AC; exhaust is vented outside through lung room window
• AC Infinity 4x4 Tent
  • Intake and exhaust fans have carbon filters; exhaust is vented outside through lung room window.
• Intake Fan: AC Infinity Cloudline Lite S6, 6" 352 max CFM
• Exhaust Fan: AC Infinity Cloudline S6, 6" 402 max CFM
• Circulating Fans: 2x AC Infinity Cloudray S6, 6" Oscillating Fans
• Light: MARS HYDRO TS3000 450W
• Seeds: x4 Purple Haze Feminized from ilovegrowingmarijuana
• Soil: Coast of Maine Stonington Blend in x4 5-gallon fabric pots

Watering / Nutrient History:

• 09/05: Planted in seed starter mix
  • watered with distilled +calmag until xplanted
• 09/29: Transplanted into stonington blend
  • Watered in with distilled water +kangaroots 5ml/gal
• 10/02: Not soaking the entire substrate, only approx 500ml was given per plant (in fact I never presoaked the soil before transplanting which may have been a mistake)
  • Distilled water + calmag
  • Foxfarm Grow Big: 5ml/gal, half recommended dosage
  • F!shshit: 5ml/gal
  • pH=6.5
  • EC=0.7mS
• 10/04: Increased amount of water to 1200mL per plant
  • Distilled water + calmag
  • Foxfarm Grow Big: 7.5ml/gal, 3/4 recommended dosage
  • F!shshit: 5ml/gal
  • pH=6.8
  • EC=1.1mS
• 10/15: Increased amount of water again to approximately 4.7L per plant, this is 25% of container capacity (this may have been too much)
  • Distilled water, no calmag this time
  • Foxfarm Grow Big: 15ml/gal, full dosage (why did I do this?)
  • F!shshit: 5ml/gal
  • pH=6.5
  • EC=1.2mS
• 10/26: Slightly less water this, taking too long to dry out I think, gave approx 1 gal per plant, around 20% container capacity.
  • Tap water, set out for 24 hrs to off gas chlorine
  • Didn't add anything.
  • pH=8.0
  • EC=0.2mS=243uS
  • TDS=116ppm@0.5 / 159ppm@0.7

Equipment

09/14/22
Back right plant, aka the runt, only in soil for two days here, her predecessor died during germination
The other three are 9 days in soil.
Seeds were germinated in a cup of water and put into coast of maine seed starter mix.

Second nodes coming in nicely for the elder three, runt is on first node!

I might suggest looking at some other breeder's for future endeavors but it's fine to grow what you have now. Do some reading on the seed and strain review thread and see who looks good to you. Best of luck with your grow, I'm interested in the 6" oscillating fan from Infinity so your feedback on how it does for you will help me decide if it's the right one for my tent.

Elder three at 3 weeks now; the runt is 2 weeks!
Elder three on 4th node, runt on 3rd node.

Are you planning on doing some transplanting soon they look great by the way just look as though they are ready for a up pot and your at that time.

Transplated into 5gal coast of maine stonington blend; some leaves looking funky to me, maybe hungry. They were in coast of maine seed starter blend until this transplanting.

Thanks for the input! Any breeders you might recommend?

I love the oscillating fans so far; I don't have much to compare to as these are the first fans for this purpose I've ever owned.
However, I can say that: they run quietly, easily adjustable push buttons on the back (one button changes fan level, the other turns on the oscillating motor, or this can be done from your controller if you use one), the clips are strong I've never had them move on me. My one complaint so far is the control cord length, was a bit of a stretch from the controller to the opposite corner of the tent but you can get extension cords.

They got transplanted a little later than I had planned since when I went to open my new bags of soil to transplant, I saw gnats crawling on the top...yikes!...I closed it up and took it outside immediately.

Yeah I get that it’s always good to prep your soil and sanitize it before introducing it to your grow all soils from stores and wherever are bound to have soemthing in them you don’t want in your grow

I like DC seed exchange if you are in the US. A lot of good breeders on there. Easy to get, and quick.

Leaf issues! They had not been getting any nutrients added to their water until this point aside from cal-mag to bring distilled water EC from 0 to 0.4, which would also bring the pH down to about 6. Maybe a little low pH for soil? I keep learning new info every two minutes!
Here is where I gave them nutes for the first time:

• Distilled water
• cal mag
• Foxfarm grow big (6,4,4)
• F!ishshit
• pH=6.5, EC=0.7 mS, wasn't checking ppm at this time

Foxfarm isn't my ideal nutrient (not that I'd know at this point of my experience, but it seems I really want to move towards living soil organic methods with top dressings and such) but it's all I have for now. I have foxfarm growbig, tigerbloom, and general hydroponics calmag.

I really like DC Seed Exchange, been shopping with them over 5 years and I love the customer service. He's trying to update his website as it can be a bit hard to navigate but the selection and prices are great. I like Strayfox Gardens, Useful Seeds, Briscos Bargain Beans, GuamMaineian Gardens and a bunch more. Magic Strains has really good auto flower seeds if you go the auto flower route. Gnome Automatics is another great auto flower breeder.
Having good genetics from known breeders can help a lot when you're learning. Consistent plants that don't have a bunch of phenotypes makes it easier to manage the canopy height for lights as well as feeding tolerances. Thanks for the fan info, you're the first tent I've seen them in.

Topped the ladies today; pinched off just above fourth node. Botched the pinching on my fourth plant, not pictured here as lights went out and I was too lazy to get my real camera..haha...but I accidentally pinched one of the new arms when I was topping the fourth plant

I use organic dry amendments from Dr Earth with just a little Epsom salt added for extra Magnesium. Hopefully someone with recent Fox Farm's experience can help you on what to feed with their line. As a basic starting point I used 50% of what they recommended when I used chemical nutes and then upped it until I saw slight nute burn. I'd back it off a little bit from that and try to keep them getting 10%-15% runoff to avoid building up salts in the soil.
I'd recommend trying to use your tap water unless it's really bad. The plants are fine with just about anything fit for you to drink. Getting a water report is usually free and available online for most city water. Well water should be fine unless it's really hard. Buying distilled water gets to be a pain and adds up money wise as you grow. Using tap water most plants will never need Cal Mag, there's plenty in most soil and base fertilizer recipes.
