Is he? Or is he just forcing them down a road that they were already on?
They were and always will be the party of the extreme right whether religious or constitutional. Conservative is a poor choice of words for the GOP. I'm conservative. But I believe people have rights therefore it's none of my business what others do as long as they're not directly affecting others or underage children. But the GOP hardcore followers are evangelicals or as I said constitutionalists. But I do love their tricorner hats.

They thought they’d make it to ruling-class heaven...they thought they weren’t expendable

I certainly don’t consider that ignorant rabble to be “constitutionalists” in ANY meaningful sense; I stopped getting cogent commentary from ‘patriots’ around the time Clinton was sworn in...it’s been replaced with large chunks of fundamental misunderstanding about the nation, our founding documents,,.or the government those documents create. I date the genesis of the “alt.sphere” to around then (the Gingrich House/Contract on America).

I don't really know why or can explain why I think often about the writings of William Shakespeare when considering Donald J Trump.
Is it a fucking comedy, like Much Ado about Nothing or a tragic example of Madness like Macbeth?
OK, fuck it.
I choose the latter.
Here's the Madman this morning in DC addressing his minions/supplicants.
Fucking tragic/scary/horrifying

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle.
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing".
