DC AG Racine: 'I'm Looking At A Charge Under The DC Code Of Inciting Violence' | Andrea Mitchell

Washington, DC Attorney General Karl Racine tells Andrea Mitchell that given the rhetoric from President Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and others ahead of the Capitol Hill riots, he's "looking at a charge under the DC code of inciting violence, and that would apply where there's a clear recognition that one's incitement could lead to foreseeable violence."

Fmr. Defense Secy. Cohen: Capitol Hill Riots Part Of Whitelash In America

Former Defense Secretary William Cohen joins Andrea Mitchell to discuss the Capitol Hill riots. He puts the rage from the crowds in the context of the history of racism in the America, saying, "Now we're seeing the white backlash or 'whitelash' as it's called...What is the basis of all of the rage? It's because white people have come to the conclusion that the playing field that has been so uneven in the past is now being leveled."

Prosecutors weigh ‘heavy hammer’ — felony murder — for rioters in Capitol officer’s death

As federal prosecutors file charges against rioters who took part in last Wednesday’s violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol, investigators continue to gather evidence in the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died from injuries sustained during the attack.

While most murder investigations focus on the person or persons who caused the fatal injury, former federal prosecutor Tim Heaphy said prosecutors could charge many rioters with felony murder, even if they were nowhere near Sicknick.

Is this where they scream "you are treating me like a black person"?

1 member of law enforcement arrested, 2 suspended over conduct during Capitol attack
One member of law enforcement was arrested and two Capitol Police officers were suspended for their behavior during the Wednesday insurrection at the Capitol, according to Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio).

"The Capitol Police are looking at everybody involved that potentially facilitated, on a big level or small level in any way, and it's important that they're cracking down on that," Ryan told reporters Monday.

One of the officers who was suspended had been shown taking a selfie with one of the rioters in video footage that went viral on social media. The other had apparently donned a red "Make America Great Again" hat and directed the mob.

Details of the arrested individual remained sketchy, and Ryan said he was not clear if it was a member of the Capitol Police, the National Guard or other law enforcement.

Ryan, who chairs the funding committee that oversees the Capitol Police, said there was no evidence of a broader "inside job," or indications that members of the force had cooperated with or organized with the insurrectionists.

He also said he was raising questions as to why more aggressive tactics were not used to deter the crowds seeking to break into the Capitol and disrupt its certification of President-elect Joe Biden's November election victory.

Ryan confirmed that there were between 10 to 15 total investigations for misconduct during the event taking place.

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, a 75-year-old cancer survivor, has tested positive for the coronavirus after taking shelter in a room with other lawmakers, some of whom refused to wear masks, during last week’s violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

“I received a positive test result for COVID-19, and am home resting at this time,” she said in a statement. “While I am experiencing mild, cold-like symptoms, I remain in good spirits and will continue to work on behalf of my constituents.”

Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) said she believes she contracted the virus while in protected isolation during the riot. Many lawmakers were sheltered in a large committee room together as the mob stormed the Capitol.

On Sunday, Brian Monahan, the attending physician to Congress and the Supreme Court, told lawmakers that the people in that room may have been exposed to someone with the virus.

“The time in this room was several hours for some and briefer for others,” Monahan said. “During this time, individuals may have been exposed to another occupant with coronavirus infection.”

He encouraged members who had been in the room to get tested.

Watson Coleman, who is beginning her fourth House term, said she was among the many lawmakers who have received the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

In 2018, she said she was cancer-free after a spot was detected on her lungs and she had a small tumor removed.

Public health experts expect last week’s attempted insurrection to create a swell of new coronavirus cases. The rioters at the Capitol weren’t wearing masks or social distancing, and lawmakers, aides, members of the media and other support staff found themselves huddled together in barricaded rooms.

A video published by Punchbowl News showed a group of Republicans in close conversation in a lockdown room refusing to accept masks from Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.).

President-elect Joe Biden told reporters after receiving his second dose of the coronavirus vaccine that he was “appalled” by the video.

“I was appalled when I saw, in fact, it was my distinguished congresswoman from the state of Delaware. . . when they were hiding from the mob, she was going around trying to hand out masks to everybody. And her Republican colleagues wouldn’t wear a mask. I think it’s irresponsible,” Biden said.

Rep. Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.) said the night of the riot that she had left the secure location out of fear of catching the coronavirus from her maskless GOP colleagues.

“We were removed to a secure location with other members, but it was really crowded, and there are still
Republican members who refuse to wear their face masks,” she said, during an interview Wednesday on MSNBC.
“And so I decided I did not feel safe staying in those crowded conditions, and I have gone to a less safe alternate location, but one where I feel like, you know, I’m in a safer environment.”

It might end up that these elected seditionists actually are the ones killing members of congress.
