Ring of fire is good, one of my favorites is ghost riders, and gods gonna cut you down...but he did such a crazy job on Hurt...I'm not an emotional person and my eyes water when i listen to him do it. Reznor himself didn't do it as well.

A lot of these guys play guitar as a hobby, George Conway for example and Joe Scarbough has a band etc. Jack Smith is an ironman competitor apparently, so he might not be the musical type, more the determined Pitbull type.

Tubes produce 2nd-order harmonic distortion as a gain product, which is called "euphonic" (good-sounding) distortion
I have an MP3 of my surf band playing our instro version of Ghost Riders that was recorded in my friend's living room on my birthday- I'd been into the Old Ezra 101 so it's a little sloppy

I’m surprised! I think bought it was a common property of solid state.
There was a company back in the day (SiriuS, revived as GamuT) whose amp I trialed in my Paleozoic system. It sounded astonishingly articulated. I couldn’t afford it, and the merchant went on into Far Westernesse.
I ended up with this. Pretty damn close, and it still drives my small (Mesozoic) system.

Pass Labs X150.
I find that I really like Pass Labs gear. The pre (in the lesser system) is their single-chassis X2.
The big rig (the Wave-Motion Engine) is built around a bigger amp, the X350.5 mated to the X0.2 preamp. All fossils from when I had money.
bitch weighs 250 pounds. I had to pay younger people to move it.
I used this as the best headphone amp I ever heard. Now it drives the big bitch and a pair of these. (Inch-thick carbon monocoque. 230 pounds a side.) Rockport Syzygy. It’s overkill for a half-deaf old-timer, but (smile)
Wave Motion.
