Jars

I'm always looking for jars to cure and store in. The big Fido on the left is real nice but too expensive especially with shipping. The half gallon Kerr canning jar is inexpensive but a little small. The one gallon Vestil food grade HDPE plastic jar is pretty nice. It's only $6.50 on amazon. However it's plastic and I'd prefer to store in glass. Somebody on this thread suggested going to Walmart and getting the bulk pickle jar. I did that today and I think it's perfect! Seriously it was LESS THAN 4 bucks and it's nice big jar! I ate a pickle and threw the rest out and put it in the dishwasher and it's good to go. I'll be making pickle jar trips to walmart often.

Any glass jar will do as long as it has a good seal, plastic jars are not recomended.

yes, my point was to recommend a good big glass jar at a nice price that anybody close to a walmart can get. i would prefer glass as well but on the other-hand i don't really know why plastic is not recommended if it's food grade.

Its not completely sealed off. Stuff is still allowed to permeate through even if its slowly. Thc because of its composition sticks to it easily...you know the plastic smell or taste of water or just old plastic, it can contribute to an off smell as well, more probable though is terpenes will escape simply making your bud not quite as stanky or tasty..not to mention you can't collect kief or broken trichs on the bottom of the jar

i see, now that makes sense. i've never stored in plastic but i have cured in it a couple of times when i've ran out of glass jars. so now i'm still searching for reasonably priced gallon sized glass jars. i wish i could buy a 12 pack of those XL vlasik pickle jars somewhere.

most delicatessens will give you the 1 gallon pepper jars. some poke holes in lid to open easier, duct tape is an easy fix.

Ace hardware carries the 2 quart Ball jars. My local Walmart(s) never have the jars in stock.

What is the name of the drying packets you have in the jars?

One really great thread going on here guys . I am off to ace to check out the Ball mason jars. Ok, a couple of things I am puzzled about . First, lets imagine the jars are full , just a little breathing room on top and sealed. Will all the opening and closing later on seriously effect the product. Or is the big issue to do with using non air tight containers such as plastic ......that have a small exchange of gases going on all the time ?.......Might it be a better idea to have many smaller air tight glass jars than a few bigger ones to avoid exposing the buds to much air ?

no if you go with to big of a jar you have to worry about mold because to much of the flowers are buried in the middle covered by other buds. Besides anything glass and bigger than a gallon is just a nightmare. heavy and a real disaster when you drop it.

edit* so yes smaller jars is better but not for the reason you gave. imho ;)

hhhmmmm.....seems like half the posts on this thread just vanished! i'm not even stoned!

i see boveda has a 49% humidipack. maybe that would be a little better for those worried about mold and the weed being to damp? this is all an experiment for me. i just started using them so i'm a little worried. i've never had mold. i think i've had the opposite problem, keeping them too dry.

If you want good flavor, get your pot totally dry before you seal it up. Most people tend not to do this, because they want to feel they are getting more yield then they are... Unless you get your pot powder dry before you smoke it, you don't get the full effects... Most people smoke wet pot, to one degree or another.... Take an ounce of weed, and microwave it, until it's actually dry, see how much it weighs then.

i purchase large 2 gallon glass cookie jars from walmart for like ten bucks. There is a difference between drying and curing.Just let the stuff hand out for a few days . then cut it off the branch's let sit in a warm dry place for a few more days then put it into a jar and burp the jar every day.Do not fill any jar up you get as it needs some breathing air in the jar.
There is a good article on curing and drying in the sticky section around here. It will give you the percent of humidity you want in your weed when it is done.
You could if you want even put a humidifier in the jar until you get the hang of it.
