JDM's FIRST Outdoor '09

I started 3 plants inside around the end of April under 2 19 watt CFLs, one of the bulbs burned out so when it got warm enough I moved them out doors. They have been outside since the begginning of June. Indoors they never grew to fast because of the low level of lights and once outdoor they suffered from slugs and ants but now I have them in a pretty good location and they are getting up there. I have been taking pics since they spouted so be prepared to look at many!

Same Day (The Biggest One)

06/11/09 (41 Days Old)
Firsy Day Outside.

Same Day (The Big One)

06/15/09 (45 Days Old)
Moved to location 2 after huge ant infestation. Planted into a hole filled with generic potting soil. Built a weak fence to ward off deer.

Same Day (TBO  )

06/20/09 (50 Days Old)
Noticed a slugs around my plants. Couldn't do anything about it that day.

Same Day (The Big One)

06/26/09 (56 Days Old)
Moved back into pots and elevated as an attempt to keep the slugs away.

07/02/09 (62 Days Old)
Noticed some ants crawling up around the plants, but at least the slugs can't get up there :). On the left you can see my attempt at LST on one of the smallet plants. You can't see it, but on the right I tried to FIM that plant.

07/05/09 (65 Days Old)
Top started growing back up on the LSTed plant. I couldn't see two new tops on the FIMed plant yet.

Same Day (LST Attempt)

07/19/09 (79 Days Old)
Moved plants to a better location. No more pests! :D The Big One was falling over so I supported it. When I got to the old location to move the plants the string I LSTed with was just gone which was a little strange so I decided to let it go straight. My attempt at FIMing failed so it is just topped there now.

Same Day (Failed LST)

Feel free to post comments and be sure to keep your eyes out on updates every few days. :D

Went and checked up on my gals today. Moved the big one and watered and added more soil up the stalk because roots were trying to grow out the sides.

The Big One
Moved to a patch of plants near where it was before to get more sunlight. It blends in so well that I lost it a few times.

FIMed
Apparently I didn't fail at the FIMing because there are two tops now it just took a while to show up. I am excited to see this girl grow up now. Even more than I would be anyways. :)

Failed LST
Not much to say. Some of the lower leaves are turning brown and yellow and dying. Besides that it is growing good and has gotten 3 or 4 new leaf sets since last time. I am kind of concerned about the lack of side growth so I am looking for a spot where it will get more light on the sides.

Bugs
Found these guys on my bag when I got back from checking on my plants. Any one have any information about them?

WE'VE GOT A FEMALE! :D :D :D
Found some female preflowers on the small plant that I FIMed growing at the base of the two tops. Sorry about the poor pic quality it looks like a sack but there are two hairs growing out of it and it isn't hanging down. I am keeping my eyes on the rest of the plants to make sure they don't become male and ruin my girl.

I am devoting this update to sexing my plants!
Any and all help will be excellent!

FIMed Plant
I already know it's a girl but for those who don't know what to look for when sexing her is what a female flower looks like. Only one more has grown since last update a week ago. I hope things speed up!

The Big One
Looks female to me but honestly it is too early to tell. The like nub looks like it has two hairs but still not sure quite yet. What do you guys think?

Failed LST Plant
I am sure this one is too early but who knows maybe some one here knows more than me.

Once again guys feel free to leave some comments if you think you can help or if you you have any questions or if you just want to say hi. Peace! :joint:

Soil was bone dry when I went out so I gave a liter of water to each of the smaller plants and 2 liters to the biggest one. As I was leaving my location it started puring though so I guess it wasn't really neccessary. I have successfully determined that The Big One and the FIMed one are female and I am almost certain the the failed LST one is a male but I am going to keep and because it is a sturdy male and I want to pollinate some of the lower buds on the big one to make some seeds for next year.

The Big One
Another female! :D Has gotten a bit taller and has some pretty healthy looking side branches. Can't wait to see this girl plump with bud!

The very top of the plant had some damage that looked like something was nibbling on it or maybe cold damage? It is grayish and curly on the very top and then it gets kind of purple. Anyone know what this it? Doesn't seem like that much of a problem right now.

The FIMed One
The two tops are very noticable now and overall it is growing well. There don't seem to be many bud sites yet though and the bud formation is going pretty slowly. I also noticed that the first hairs to show up are already completely brown. Is this normal or is it some sort of nute problem?

Male :(
I am pretty sure there are balls. I am going to keep this one around but FAR away. I am going to pollinate one of the lower buds on the Big One so I can have some nice seeds for next year. I also plan on using it for hash.

This is one of the balls I was talking about. It's a male from what I can see.

There was a lot of growth which is why I am keeping it to make seeds.

So now I know I atleast have two females that I am going to see through to harvest. And I also have a male to make some seeds for next year and to make some hash this year. :D Thanks to anyone who has been following this and stay tuned for an update in a week or too.

They have been flowering for 3 weeks so about 5 and a half left? The male plant is like a big bud of balls right now but none have opened so no pollen yet.

The Big One
Got some good branching now. I tied some of the branches down to get more light but I didn't get a chance to take pictures of that.

The FIMed One
The two tops are now almost as tall as the main stem and it is covered in preflowers I am expecting to see bud sites soon. Also when do trics usually start to show up?

The Male
I wish the females I have were this big. It looks like a big nug of nuts.

I was wondering if any one had some information on trimming during flowering? I have seen many plants that look like the fan leaves have been clipped during flowering. Will this help the branches and buds grow more? If anyone wants to see higher resolution versions of these pics (because they aren't linked to the originals)
here is a link to my gallery. Peace until next update. :joint:

Looking good Johnny. You put a lot of work moving these plants around and hopefully it will pay off soon. Sorry, I'm not going to wade into the never ending debate regarding trimming healthy leaves from a plant. Myself, I leave them alone. Best of luck!

dont pull ANY fan leaves except dead ones...like all yellow ones...pulling or trimming leaves just stresses plants out.

I thought that it would stress them out too. Thanks for the help.

Went out a little later than I normally do and that will be the last time. Everything was fine until I was walking back and heard a wolf howling about 100yards away. I started running and thankfully didn't hear from it again, but it still scared the crap out of me. Anyways, on to the plants. The FIMed one is really starting to bud but still doesn't have any trics yet. It has a good strong skunky smell to it though. Can anyone tell me what strain this it is or can point me in the direction of some resources that will help me find out the strain. It looks predominantly indica to me going by the fat leaves. The bigger one is getting pretty tall now, up to my chest. Just looking at it I can predict where the cola is going to be and where all the popcorn nuggets are going to show up. I decided to chop down the male so I didn't get seeds but I did collect pollen and I am going to try to breed some seeds in one of the lower nugs on each plant. Also with the trimmings from the male I am going to be making hash and trying to make rolling paper. I will post a link later to show everyone how that turns out.

Ah nice grow you've got going!

Hopefully mine will last until I can convince my friend's mother to take my (hopefully female) plant indoors because my 'rents don't want anything to do with it!

The purple on mine looks pretty cool though, so as long as it stays warm for another 2 months it'll be fine.

Just a noob question though: Why did the LST fail for you? What should I do differently lol

For some reason everytime I LST the string I use falls off so I would suggest using wire. Also first frost is suppose to be october 6th where I live so you have about a month doesn't mean you will get nothing just not very much. You can still put it outside during the day until it gets too cold but if you can, bring her inside at night. Your plant looks very healthy, keep it up and thanks for stopping by. bongsmilie

Every thing seems to be going smoothly now and the little preflower are really starting to look like buds. They look like little hairy snowballs. The little leaves around the hairs and some of the hairs are starting to turn purple probably because it is dropping below 50°F. I am hoping things are going to start to speed up soon there still aren't any trics showing. Anyone know how much more time left? I am saying another 25 to 30 days. I collected as much pollen as I could from the male I cut down last week and saved it. There is probably enough to pollinate a few plants but I don't want to many seeds. I pollinated the lowest two buds on each of my plants and hopefully will get atleast 5 seeds from each. I plan on starting these seeds in march of next year along side some fem and then putting them outside in april, but that will be another journal. I would like to thank fdd2blk for making this thread showing how to make seeds. Thats all for this week, enjoy the pics (first 3 are FIM others are The Big One). :joint:

A short video of me pollinating my biggest bagseed female with pollen from a bagseed male but of a different strain. Hoping I get the skunky smell and tighter branching of the male with the height and stability of the female. I will probably be starting the grow journal for those seeds in February or March if everything goes ok.
