When I was in Newark, NJ, that's all they called me lol. Not one person knew my name. What's worse, they all knew who was being talked about!! I was just "the gringa".

what were you doing in Newark? i grew up about 30 miles from there. lived in Hoboken for a while after college till i moved into the city.

it really isn't a derogatory word at all. they love using nicknames in latin america. they call me "pelon" which literally means "bald" i'm not bald wither, i just have always shaved my head. that's latin culture though.
