Dunno Pin. A religion, dunno. Guess ya either do or don't, I do. Garcia was a lot more than the Dead, he had a lot of musical interests. For me, it was a "civilizing" influence

oh, i love me some man in black.. he's a bit different to the dead though imvho.. at least, well, if you don't know the differences between the dead and jc, idk what to say, lol..
my old man was in the army in the early 60;s, late 50s, and was stationed in florida, where he first heard jc on the radio.. he got back home, walked into a record store in philly looking for records, and they had never heard of him.. so yeah, jc runs deep in my blood.. :D

i can kind of see where pin was coming from calling the dead a religion to a lot of people.. man, so many people based their entire lives around jerry and the dead, spent years of their lives following them on tour... sounds a bit cultish / religious to me, but wtf do i know?

I understand people who approach them as an open minded individual, with genuine musical interest. I can respect the hell out of it (and encourage that shit). It's the blind, long haired, assholes that make them out to be some sort of "experience" that should be had..ugh...I'd rather slam my dick in a car door, then sit through another convo about how Gdead is holy or whatever.

Well, I must admit. I like some of their songs and a few albums, but I can`t stand all their live wanking long improvising soloing shit. So. How about
Friend of the Devil, Sugar Magnolia, Casey Jones, Cream Puff War, Truckin.

Also like Uncle John`s Band. That`s a gooder. And that was a quotation mark, but I`m Canadian and this is a bilingual keyboard.

Shit, I think I ran through all their songs I listen to.

The Dead was a live show (experience) band and phish-heads relate because they're similar. It's something that brings ppl together without an agro-vibe (that part is cool). Plus hippy chicks can be pretty slutty but you may have to overlook hairy-assed legs lol. But yeah, when heads sit around puffin and reminiscing about each show (that they can remember) like it was some mystical experience and jerry was god, makes most ppl want to puke. Went to one show -ever- in Vegas shortly before Jerry bit-it (I passed on the cid that day), and still loved the show.

I never got how folks could follow a band around the country and then try to impress their friends for doing so. Shit if I dropped everything to fuckoff and party for wks ina row i may not flaunt it. But guess we're all individuals and have our own ways of expressing ourselves, and being unique, so fuck it. keep on truckin or keep on suckin...

As Abe said, it was a live show band. Sometimes they hit a groove and jammed for hours. Given how long they existed, a lot of people don't like that they always played the same catalog...however, when they jammed on songs folks knew and it was freeform, it was a fine musical experience
