Jock Horror 3 week Perpetual Harvest

Allright, I am totally new to this forum. Been reading for a long time and I learned how to grow basically from reading Stink Buds thread about yielding a pound every 3 weeks. After a couple of years of tooling around with a few systems I came up with my own version but gotta give the man props, that shit was truly an Epiphany in my life!! Now, I am proud to say that after a few years of standing on the sidelines I finally get to jump into this game. So its time to post and learn. I just started a Journal and I am still not 100% on how to use the damn thing. So here is my thread.

NOTE: I am looking for CONSTRUCTIVE Criticism so please keep the pointed language to a minimum =) Were all here to learn and contribute th the Science

Ill start at the beginning:

Philosophy and Goals:
First and foremost, I want to be within the guide lines of all applicable laws. I grow medicine for me and my family and we are all licensed MMJ patients in accordance with state & local law. Two of my family members are cancer survivors. I only want to be able to grow enough medicine to meet our needs & this system is based on those pre-determined medicinal needs.
Something’s missing!!
Right off the bat a lot of folks are going to point out every glaring hole in my system. However, I am approaching this project with as humble perspective as possible. For the purpose of future data analysis, I have decided to begin with a baseline system that lacks many items deemed necessary if not critical by most other operations. Some of the key elements purposefully lacking in this initial set up are as follows:
· No CO2
· No Fresh air Intake
· No Water Chillers
· No Air stones
It is my goal to run the first 3 crops with the baseline system then add 1 item every other crop and collect and compare data. I will track specific growth rates per plant for size & collect final weights both wet and dry. I also want to study Root mass growth and compare this data as it relates to the overall quantity and quality of the yield. The prime directive is to determine the ideal recipe for my specific strains.
Choosing a Feeding System:
The first thing I learned about growing is that there are a lot of ways to do it. From soil to Hydroton to nothing but Air; to Drip systems vs. flood systems vs. sprayers and even foggers…..it all gets confusing fast. So for my system I chose to go with an Aeroponic set up for a couple of reasons.
First of all, While Aero can be the most delicate system; it also enables me to have the most control over the feeding and care of my crop, plain and simple. I come from an engineering background and I need control to get real results. It is my goal to collect and compile as much data from every crop that I can. Science proves that when we combine robust control with solid data, we lay the groundwork for truly successful results that are sustainable. I wish to create those kinds of results & evolve them into medicine that is both extremely potent and uniquely pungent; Keyword being unique.
As far as strain choices, I only grow 2 strains because I have experience with growing too many strains in the past and this makes it practically impossible to track and compare data. I’d end up with mixed results and when one crop produced medicine that was acutely effective, there was no real recipe in place to replicate it and no data behind it to reveal its composition. It’s all too much hit and miss at that point and I don’t like missing. Moreover, to produce high quality medicine and do it repeatedly it is best to maintain a small focus.
Specific Medicinal Needs
My choices for clones are also quite limited at the moment; but in terms of fulfilling our medicinal needs, I am looking for each half of the sphere; a great hybrid to stimulate the senses and a pure Indica that’ll put you to sleep. Jock Horror is my Hybrid and I have not picked the Indica yet. I chose Jock Horror because it is a very potent Hybrid strain that is uplifting and motivating. It has a much longer than normal Flower time but when allowed to fully mature it becomes the kind of bud that smells unique, tastes terrific and the high makes you want to get outside and play! It only makes sense to work to perfect its recipe. I am thinking possibly a Hindu Kush for the Indica and will provide further information on that soon.

Sit back and have a toke....bongsmilie

- Provides largest space for root growth & O2 absorption
Added Cut Black plastic to precisely cover the lid
- Blocks out most of the light
- Promotes roots to pop
Weather Stripping around lip
- Prevents leaks
2” Net Pot sites
- Trimmed cages to allow for root expansion

Veg units - 32 Sites each
Flower Units - 6 Sites each

Spray manifolds
- 240 GPH pump
- PVC ¾” piping
- Common Spray Heads
- Bored out to prevent clogging

Timer set to:
- On - 1hr 30 min
- Off - 30 min

Veg Room currently holds two DIY custom nursery units .
Each unit holds (2) 27 gal Reservoirs under 1 T5 HO rack 2'X4'
Each Reservoir holds 32 babies

Notice the towels. This was before the weather stripping
was added

I have made spray units from just about every kind of tote available. Home Depot has the best by far. 12$ gets you a tough unit with no deforming under weight and the design almost eliminates leaks. A lip of weather stripping is all it takes to stop them for good though.

I created a template to make it easy to mass produce covers that fit the reservoir lids.
I found that the additional darkness promoted root sprouting signifcantly.

The design for the spray manifold is much more crucial for the cloning units than for the Flower units.
For fresh cutting to thrive, It is important to hit all sites with sufficient water - especially when running the time schedules that I do.

So far the biggest problems I had with DIY aero spray units is dry spots. They can cause clones to pop roots a lot slower than the rest of the pack and that can screw with the perpetual schedule big time.

After that it has been flimsy construction of the PVC manifold that causes the unit to tip over in the Reservoir. Especially under the weight of the big plants root ball. This new design adresses both issues.
Spray Manifold 2.jpg
Spray heads are offset, inserted at angles and rotated to cover all sites.
Inaddition the PVC specs fit the manifold exactly to the edge of the reservoirs wich acts like legs and prevents tipping.

Thank you sir.
Detail is in my nature.
And I love to draw (high) w/ Adobe Illustrator too so that helps.

For our 1st crop we are at week 9 in Flowering. I have never grew this strain before so I dont know exactly when its gonna be ready. I am currently watching Trichrome development daily. Incidently the color of the trics is still very clear but we have 1-2 weeks left still so im not too worried. No pics of those yet :-( will get microscope camera soon .

As far as crop size, You'll notice very uneven growth in my 1st crop.
I feel this is mainly due to a limited selection of clones. I started fast & basically had to use every one I could get no matter the condition for the 1st crop. When they started flowering they ranged in size from 12" -16"
P1120891.jpg
I put 25 plants in to flower under two 1000 W HPS after 3 weeks of veg . because of the size difference 2 of them got overshadowed too quickly & never matured enough to produce decent buds ...so I hacked them at week 8. The rest did fine but, a few grew to tower over the rest with big main colas while most others remained squat producing smaller denser bud sites but more in quantity. The smallest plants currently stand just under 3 ft while the tallest are just under 4 feet.

This means for the 1st crop my plants tripled in size during flowering. I suspect that this will hold up as the average over time. I am always shooting for a 2lb per light yeild. However, due to the uneven growth I dont think Im gonna hit that for this harvest.

Oh well.
Its all a work in progress bongsmilie

One monster outgrew everyone else though and actually produced 2 large main colas of equal length.

For the second crop I had more control of the selection process and so I brought a lot more big strong girls into the room. Almost every plant came in at around 20 inches.

I am hoping they all turn out to be two headed monsters too

Thanks for stopping by! I know there are a lot of holes right now in terms of major components missing, but by the end of the year they will all be implemented and ill have more than a dozen comparative examples behind me. I am looking forward to tracking data over the long term and posting it in my journal. We're truly passionate about a scientific approach to our grow. Its the only way we can truly replicate success and adress specific medicinal needs.

Couple Quick Questions.

First,
How long do you veg your clones for?

Second,

Are those LED's in your Veg room? I am thinking about running my set-up very closely to yours, but running whole thing with LEDs to cut my heat signature, and power costs.

Third,
What is the cycle you are running? How many weeks per stage, and what are your nutes schedule like?

nice work man! as far as your worries about the trichromes, u prolly wont be getting foggy trichromes in 9 weeks. I think Stink Bud said something about liking the effects of sativas when they are slightly immature and the effects of indicas when they are slightly overripe, or something like that…

As far as timing, its less about firm dates and more about sizes. I look to start flowering between 18-20 inches. How long it takes to get there often depends on ideal circumstances. I created a custom schedule in Excel for every crop to help me manage it and compare stage lengths over time. Im running a perpetual cycle with 3 stages at 3 weeks between stages.

Note: Can someone tell me how to get the pics so they appear larger in the thread?
(Update: I figured it out thanks to a few helpful folks!)

Use the "basic image uploader" not the advanced.

Then, after you upload the pics, you'll see them listed below where you uploaded them. Right click the image link, copy link URL, and then in the post type this:

[ i m g ] PASTE THE URL HERE [ / i m g ]

Remove the spaces, I had to put those in so you could see the code.

That's it................

Thanks Kitty! Always nice to see you around =)
Hmmmm im having a little trouble. I upload fine and dandy using the basic uploader, not the advanced. But when its done, the pic shows up in the text and I dont see the option to copy "URL"....only copy....which copies the photo...

Am I totally oblivious to the obvious here?? =) Probably

Thanks for any help!!
