Jockey Box Cooler

Has anyone tried a jockey box cooler to cool their res. If so was it over kill on cooling? If it is too much i wonder if i knocked a 10'' hole in my basement floor, busted out the post hole digger, and put the stainless cooling coil (120 ft. long) down about 3ft. Fill the hole back in with the in and out lines sticking out, re cement. I have a high water table where I'm at, so the coil would probably be in water year round. I have a shallow point in my basement floor for watering my yard. I checked the temp. of the water that it pumps and its 56 deg. what do you think? my 55 gallon res. temps. have been 70-73 this summer. it would have to cool it something. on the plus side once its in, its pretty much free cooling (cost of a small pump to circulate). Has anyone tried this kind of setup? thanks

What you are describing is basically a heat pump. Sounds like a whole lot of work the way you are going about it. And tell us about this 120' coil of stainless please. What are the dimensions of this critter?

I've considered doing the same thing. I'm in a similar situation: high water table, and a sump pump hole i could dig out. Coil dia., wall thickness, length, material and fluid speed will affect heat transfer. My idea was to have enough coils to hold appx 1/4-1/3 of my res volume, have a couple thermal switches. One thermal switch turns on pump when res gets to preset temp, the other switches the pump off when it senses warm water coming out of the cooling circuit. This way you have a volume of water sitting in the coils being chilled to ground temp at all times, i don't think constant recirc would pull enough heat.

I'm at the point where i only need a little cooling for a couple months and i don't really want to spend the hundreds on a chiller.
