I will be getting my new 150 watt hps light today. Someone on here told me that about 18 inches away from the top of the plant. Is that right?

I don't use a 150, but I can tell you that 18 inches is too far away, unless you are talking about tiny seedlings. My 400 is less that 12 inches from the tops at all times.

If you are going to link things like this , might be best to also explain what the terms are and what the graph represents. I personally have never heard of PAR.

Well im asuming this guy isnt a idiot and he can figure it out.

Put your hand right at the plant level, if your hand gets too hot, then the lights are too close. Adjust until you feel strong warmth, but not heat.

idk i keep my 250 watt hps 5inches aweay i just measured to help you out i have a fan on them liek on medium

Light height from the top of the plants should be determined by the temp, not inches.

You should take a thermometer & take readings directly under the bulb at the canopy, then raise/lower the light to the temps your plants are ok with.

thank you, these guys were killing me with exact measurements. to many other things come into play for you to be able to just say - "uh, 2 1/2 feet sounds good to me". room size, initial room temp, venalation, hood ventalation, ect...

with that said, i can have my 400w hps 4 inches above my canopy. but my hood is sealed and vented and my room is very well ventalated and fans keep the air circulating in my room.

Here's two charts that i use, think they're much easier to read/understand

I have a security 150HPS I rigged up... I keep mine about 5" away...
