Keeping amendments fresh

Bought a 50 lb bag of crab meal last week for a grow coming up for a good price. I read this morning that there's bits of meat in there and ran to check and sure enough it's mothy. I'm keeping it in kitty litter buckets as i thought it'd be better than the paper bag it came in but is this inevitable? Cause I'm kinda freakin out I don't want this to go bad or do the plants not mind?

Like there's moths in the crab meal[im pretty sure theyre moths]. Also there's clumps which have been there since I bought em I figured it was just the way they came but now I'm starting to overthink and its making me worry. I'm gonna use 25 lbs off the rip but I don't want them to go bad like maybe I should get some airtight buckets or something? How do you guys store your amendments, especially the fishy ones?

Ohhfff. Grain moths are the worst. Once you've got em, you sorta need to get rid of everything in your cupboard. A sealed bucket won't help, they will still keep laying eggs.

If it's bug filled you might now want to store it.. But I store my Gaia Green and dry amendments in 5 gal buckets with gamma seal lids...

Oh, that's sucks. Actual moths. I might use it outside, but I wouldn't use it inside. Just doesn't sound like a good idea. Were the buckets sealed? The desiccant packs can help keep moisture out of some of the dry amendments though I've learned.

thaanks for the input guys! yea ive collected a lotta kitty litter buckets but i drilled lil holes in em for my castings but ima try n bake it quick and then put it in a airtight bucket cause ive dropped a lot on amendments over the last 2 weeks and i gotta try and salvage it lmao

Spray that shit with Bacterial Thuricide or "BT." It's a bacteria thats save for people and plants but takes out moths and caterpillars.
