My review of Kush Expo 2012
The decision to go to the Kush Expo this year was a last minute choice made pretty much because we had nothing else to do on Sunday and we wanted to get my brother his med rec there. Three of us ended up going; me, my brother, and a friend of mine who is currently on a sabbatical from smoking because she is looking for a new job and expects a piss test as a condition of employment. We fortified ourselves with two bags of potato chips, a Kit Kat, a bag of Skittles, and four CDs (Bob Marley, Sublime, The Dead Kennedys, and Pink Floyd) for the ride. I also rolled two joints for the occasion and we (my brother and I) smoked one prior to going in.
We left a little before 11:30 and walked in the doors at the Anaheim convention center about 12:50. The drive there wasn't too bad and about the only traffic that we encountered was where the 91 meets the 15 (it’s always fucked up there though). We had a little bit of a problem getting in because the gate at the entrance was broken and was stuck in the open position-I believe for accounting purposes that they have to keep track of how many times the gate open and closes, but who knows.
The first thing that we noticed when we got there was how cold it was inside of the convention center. My friend (who is always cold for some reason) was wishing that she had brought a jacket or sweatshirt. The next thing that I noticed was that it seemed maybe a little smaller than last year. Oh well, the adventure was on and we started going down the rows on the left side as you enter. My brother was absolutely blown away because He had never been to anything like this before. When we were growing up Weed was 100% illegal and He couldn't believe all of the in your face advertising and promotion of smoking that was going on there. When we finished the first row we bought a beer from the guy at the end of the row (my brother and I were fighting a pretty bad case of cottonmouth at the time due to the fact that although we had stocked up on munchies for the trip, we had neglected to buy drinks).
We went down all of the aisles, checking out the vendors and the booth babes. There was some pretty cool clothing and smoking utensils for sale, although we did not buy anything except my brother who bought a t-shirt from the Icy Tokes booth for some unknown reason. I got a signed poster from the 420 Nurses and a bunch of freebies that the vendors were giving away (most of this was thrown away once I got home). We checked out the booth to get med recs, but they were super busy and patience is not one of our virtues so we ended up not getting him his rec at the expo. We continued going down the aisles occasionally stopping to check something out that interested one of us.
After we finished walking down the aisles we went and got some chicken tacos(not very good) from the booth at the rear and just kind of hung out around that area for awhile people watching. We went to the presentation by LEAP and vice presidential candidate Jim Gray (we were the vocal group sitting on the left hand side in the middle that clapped and yelled a lot because we’re good like that). We left shortly after the presentations and began the long ride home. I did not go into the 420 section because I was the only one that had their card on them and my friend wasn't smoking due to employment issues. The ride home was uneventful and everybody else fell asleep as I listened to the DKs. Overall we accomplished the stated mission of getting out of the house and doing something, but ended up not getting my brother his rec. Everyone seemed kind of ambivalent about the whole expo, and I myself thought that it could have been better in some ways. The best part of the whole thing was people watching and seeing all of the cool smoking related accessories that the vendors had.
