The above light and plants below said light do not reflect full spectrum with UV-A/B. Here is a dead give away - the stems are not purple nor are the leaves stems purple. Thus, the secondary metabolites are not being activated by UV or enough rich BLUE at 437nm or 450nm, etc.
You think "purple" is a secondary metabolite? Is that correct? If not, exactly which "secondary metabilites" are you talking about?

You do know there is no UVB in that light?

I see a ferw purple plants and talk of "scientific tests". So please, show us the tests you are referring to. Also, show us your plants and do let us know how many watts and what sort of yields you are getting.

We would all love to see your results and read in-depth of your great scientific knowledge. Please, school us.

may i ask why your running tests using arcadia bulbs... made for reptiles.
why not run tests using bulbs made for cannabis like migro uvb 310?
i would love to believe what you are saying because i can get UVA lights near me super cheap! and for me too add a UVB light into the mix i would need a new led light a new uv light + fixture etc. its 5x cheaper for me too roll UVA but im super scared that my end quality will suffer because of no UVB :(.

in the past when me and my bro would grow fire we would always use solis tek 10k metal halides which had UVA/UVB/UVC and our end quality would skyrocket!

i guess i can grow using only UVA this grow and see what results i get :( im so scared lol.

Because they are pretty much the same light. All T5 fluros start out with the same UVB plasma emission that is phosphor converted to other wavelengths. The only difference is the amount of phosphor used and sometimes the type of glass.

The spectopgraphs look a little different, but they are essentially the same. The Migro spectrometer doesn't measure every nanometer and the Arcadia spectrometer doesn't appear to either, but you can see the spectrum peaks and troughs are in the same place. The migro is basically a high UVB reptile bulb.

This image is a lot smaller than the others, but the spectrometer reading (bottom right) is much closer to the Migro

I'm not saying anything bad about the Migro, just pointing out it is nothing special – just a T5 fluoro with little to no phosphor – tha same as or similar to a lot of other reptile bulbs on the market. The UVB and UVA peaks are in the same place and only the intensity varies. The same goes for the Solarcure bulbs.

Besides, you don't need UVB to get great results, as we are trying to prove.

And Metal Halide bulbs do not typically emit any UVC – UVC is a very dangerous form of UV light used mostly for sterilisation. The sun emits UVC, but it doesn't make it through the atmosphere, so the earth receives no UVC light.

The thing about UV is that it activates the UVR8 pathway by absorbing not just UVB, but UVA and blue light, too. However, you need greater intensities of UVA and blue to get the same photomorphic response as UVB, which is why you can run UVA longer.

Hello @widowmaker31 I see some other people have addressed this post but I am not sure I understand what you are trying to say. Not all plants turn purple and in many cases it has nothing to do with the light. I'm sure you will agree that natural sunlight has plenty of UVA, UVB and blue light between 400nm and 450nm and that many seedlings grow outside and do not turn purple so I would really like to understand what your theory is so that we can try to address it. You say you have some scientific tests to compare UV so we would really like to see those as it can only add to our knowledge base. Sorry for not addressing your post earlier but I am not always active here. Can we please see your plants and tests? You have a lot of different LED lights in there can you tell us why you have so many?

Well you test uv but give the plant 20% more green and red no logic you could have used 300w lamp vs 1000w lamp and say you are testing uv
We tried to keep the lights as close as we could and I don't think there was a 20% difference in green but you will agree that any time you compare one spectrum to the other you are going to have different spectra so that is unavoidable but thanks for pointing that out. It is the reason we do these tests.

It's just that plants build these compounds in responds to an influx of stressing photon wavelengths, BUT that doesn't mean the stems, leaves etc are going to change their respective colors.
That is mostly due to a shift in the interior biosynthetic pathways in case of P-def etc

That's fine, except we weren't to know he had been banned. All we knew was he started making big statements and claiming we were all driven by "ego" and then failed to back up his claims. None of us were rude up until that point.

The other option was to hit report on those posts. In future please use that button instead of reply, thanks! It's important because we don't necessarily see every post we 'read' LOL at least in my case. We are just human and I smoke inhuman amounts of pot, thanks.

I'm sorry for causing a stir. I honestly didn't think it was a big deal. The guy made some claims that were rather provocative and we (at least four other members) gave him a chance to explain himself. He didn't, so it was only after then that we figured he was only trying to stir things up. If he had come back to explain his position, then we could quite well have been having a vigorous discussion about anthocyanins and UVR8 receptors – the types of things we're all here to discuss.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience. We know you guys work hard and can't be in all places at once. Sometimes debate gets heated but it can still be productive, hence not hitting the report button at first instance.
