Lava rock or Clay Pebbles

What's going on ? Back with another topic of discussion . So as I did my RDWCWF system I picked up a bag of lava rock. I heard it could be used and I also heard because of the pocket holes in it they hold moisture really good. Now on the bad side I heard as the roots grow they could get damaged because of the ridges in lava rock can cut the roots . I wanna get some other opinions about lava rock and if you have or what is preferred. Thanks again

I have used hydroton or neoprene collars with success. Never used lava rock. I would probably use neoprene collars if I fired up the old RDWC again.

How do you grow now
DTW Coco Coir/perlite. 70/30.
Megacrop 1 Part plus epsom, supplemented with PK booster in mid flower.
2 gallon pots and usually run 6-7 plants.
I find it uses the same amount of water but is way less hassle. One pump on timer that runs for 20 seconds 2-5 times a day. The 50 gallon nutrient reservoir last at least 7 days.
Plus it cost way less.
No chiller
No RO
Nutrient cost is about $30 for an entire grow.

Do you have a journal or anything that I could review?

I recently purchased 24 qts. of coco and I’m having trouble with it. One person mentioned adding perlite and I’m seeing that you are doing just that.

Thanks ahead of time!

I do not have a journal. Here is a pic of the last crop of which i got 2.42 lbs. of buds out of 7 plants vegged for ~40 days And harvested at 70 days. My current crop is just seedlings without leaves at this point.

I would add some perlite to that mix. I have heard of people running just perlite for seedlings. You say 24 qts of coco so 30% would be 7 qts of perlite.

I'm going to mix what perlite I have left with the coco (~3 qts.) into two small batches for the Blueberry and Super Skunk. They will be placed in 40 cu. in. pots and placed inside of my humid-dome with a heat mat.

Would there be a problem to use part of a paper towel in the bottom of the pot to retain medium?

I always do this.

I have never used a paper towel but I would be concerned with restricted flow of air and water. I start seeds using paper towel method and transfer to peat pellets once it pops. Once leaves form they go into solo cups with peat pellet placed in center of coco/perlite mix and water every day to run off.
Light nutrients after 3-5 days depending on growth.

My potting soil is peat moss.

The coco coir was advertised as “seed starter”.

Okay thank you the Internet is a dangerous place of opinions and false articles
Just add some to the pot, hold the cut in place and fill the rest of the pot up around the stem with small lava rock to support it and you'll be golden. I actually had a huge peace Lilly grown only in lava rock and fertilised with fish tank water
