no one should even doubt between Magnum and area51, magnum is diying in his own inflated claims and bs, area51 is growing in his own competitive standards.

Hi All, I've been reading through this topic for some time and there is a lot of great information.

I am a first time grower looking to jump in with LED. It appeals to me aesthetically as well as pragmatically to grow with LED. I joined this forum to be able to interact with the contributors of this thread.

The way I made it to this thread is a long and winding road. I'm into LED lights for backpacking, so when I was researching potential grow lights, I just decided to google "LED Grow Lights" which brought up an article about LED lights breaking a record for a single plant yield. This brought me to HydroGrowLED. Research on the company led (pun intended) me to find a mention of Hydroponics Hut, and I'm really digging their design, options, and brand spiel, but I'm having a hard time finding much recent mention of their products. The last mention in this thread seems to be around the End of August, 2012.

I was set on going with a PG 260x, but am weary since I cannot find much first hand experience besides the medical 420 grow that is linked to on Hydroponics Hut's website.

So I wanted to ask the experts, here. What are my options for the following planned grow?:

- 4x4x6.5' Grow Tent
- Soil Based Grow
- Up to 6 plants

My price range is right around $600 which is why I began to lean towards the Pro Grow over the HydroGrowLED. Now, I'm discovering a bunch of other companies in this thread: Blackstar, California Light Works, Black Dog, Area 51, etc. With 500+ pages, it seems a bit daunting. Any advice is appreciated greatly.

Thanks for your patience,

MojoSlim

I'd recommend staying away from the Hydroponics Hut Pro Grow LED's.
I purchased one in the past and was totally underwhelmed with how dim it was compared to other LED's that I already owned.
Trying to properly cover a 4x4 grow space with LED's for only $600 is a tough task.
If you can save up another $250 towards your LED purchase, this would be a nice fit for your tent, the A51-240:

I have an Area 51 LED light and it's been very good to me.
Good luck in your quest :)

Hey Bad Karma what's up? How's the life of love treating you? Hope you are well!
She flaked out, the engagement is off, and our relationship is over.
I seemed to have forgotten that I can only fall for whores with the "crazy in the eyes" look.
Silly me, maybe I'll remember this post before I fall in love again.

Regardless, good memory FranJan, because it's been a while.
Otherwise, I'm doing okay, thank you for asking.

Thanks for the reply. Very Much appreciated. Could you comment on which Pro Grow you purchased that you were underwhelmed with? Which LEDs that you own was it compared with? (Or, if you've already commented on this previously, a link to that post would be fine).

I did read about Area 51 here on the forums. They do seem to have great reviews. I would have to do some insane acrobotics with the check book to get the one that you recommend (which does seem to be bitchin'). My budget is not very flexible. I could save towards that light, but it may be a few more months, and I figured I could start out small and work my way up by adding lights in the future.

Is the consensus that $600 in an LED light is not adequate for a 4x4 space? If so, could someone point me towards a summary or guide to what spaces a light of this price/power would be ideal for?

Thanks again!

If you can't afford the initial start-up cost I'd suggest HID (if you can't/aren't willing to DIY). Cheap and effective (for the short-term). I'd also recommend buying from Cidly/China, it can be cheaper (sometimes even including shipping). A 4x4 at $600? A stretch, albeit not a large one, but it's just my humble opinion.

Many people are completely put off by LEDs after their first experience. This is due to many factors but more often than not it's due to the customers ignorance. I spent almost a half year reading up before I bought what I considered to be a "test" LED...

I'd also stand behind those that suggest A51, I have heard nothing but good. Good luck.

I use a RhinoGrow 400 and im pretty sure you could grab one for $550-$600 if you called there sales line. It's a 170watt unit but it will cover a 4x4 for veg and a 3x3 for flowering. Check out the website RhinoGrow.com

It's the poor heatsink surface that worries me about that Rhino ... other than that, I'd recommend it!

Thanks for jumping in with the input, folks. Very much appreciated! After a bit of measuring and negotiations with the wife on space, I am realizing I'm limited to a space closer to 2x3 (6-8 sq ft max). I'm guessing this changes a bit about my options, but more importantly, this opens the door to saving money on setting up my tent or building a box, which is money I can put towards lights!

Am in communication with A51 regarding their lights and recommendations.

David the Gnome, thanks for the tip on Rhino. Glad to hear an experience based recommendation. I'll add them to the research list :)

jubiare: thanks for the supplemental info on the rhino's potential for poor heatsinking.

HiloReign, you live in Hilo? 'Olelo Hawaii, 'oe? In any case, I appreciate your thoughtful response. I'm a little more confident about my budget now, especially with my space being a bit more limited, esp. in regards to your comment about it being "not a large stretch" (paraphrased) for a 4x4 area.

Do any of you echo BadKarma's advice regarding Pro-Grow? My focus is shifting away from them, in favor of researching more of the lights recommended here.

Thanks!

No fans for the rhino right? It just looks not big enough ... can you count how many square inches of heatsink you have? How hot it gets?

'A'ole. With great shame, I can't speak my native language very well at all.

I second what BadKarma has to say, I've read many mixed reviews about Pro-Grow and have yet to see a full grow with one (I haven't looked either, mind you).

Personally, if I had $600 to spend A51 would be the first place I'd visit. (That is if I had chosen not to make one myself, which I wouldn't do, but for the sake of expressing my opinion...)

Let us know what you decide on.
