There ya go. We will get all kind of answers, as there are many different situations. We all agree however that LEDs can and do burn plants, something that LED retailers rarely admit to. They all act shocked and blame a hot soil or your nutes.
I don't see why they wouldn't want to admit to this. All it means is the unit they manufacture puts out very intense light. This is a good thing in my opinion, as the older models did not put out quite enough light to vegetate and flower. I'm pleased that the technology has advanced to the point where we have to actually have to make sure the light is not going to burn our plants.

No one in this thread is going to argue with you. call HTG's toll free number, tell them you are going to purchase some LED lighting, but you need to know the height to hang the lights over your tomatoe plants and listen to what they tell ya. They claim in their eBay ads that they have done extensive testing, hired scientists, engineers, yada yada yada..... Yet when you talk to them, none of them actually know a damn thing about the lights. I told the man they burned my plants, and I just wanted to know the recommended height.... he told me my soil was too hot or I fed too many nutes..... Truth was, the plants were under the LED for the first time with the LED about 8" above the plants. After two hours of LED light, the tops were significantly burnt. HTG denies that the lights have anything to do with it.

Another thing to watch out for....cheap foreign knock offs that are NOT UL listed.... in fact, there are many out there that could be fire hazards, we'll never know, because they are never submitted for testing.

I haven't heard or seen anything about your yield since your grow thread got locked up. Did you ever finish your LED only grow or did you change lighting prior to harvest? Did you ever harvest? What was your g/w yield? Do you have an all HPS grow going now? I need DETAILS, lol! I tried PM'ing you but your account has that dissabled for some reason it seems.
Hey Serapis, did you not see this post or just not wanting to reply?

Actually, some people like to come into LED threads just to argue :)
I think its those cheap knock offs that have given LED's such a bad rep. They look exactly the same but have lower quality diodes and probably cheap power supplies in them. If it weren't for those imitations floating around we might have more people in the LED threads.

Thanks for all the good information on this everyone, I also burned mine when they were a week old by having them about 12" away so ive taken the LED off until now which is about 3 weeks on of my first grow. I had it 12" away since yesterday and they are perking right up! They were kinda droopy in my first pics because I just watered.

Hey Serapis, I started following your thread "NEW Closet Set Up for L.E.D. Stealth Grow" like 2 weeks before it got closed down and if I remember correct it was supposed to be done around thanks giving. Did the rollitup police close it because there was too many LED bashers or something? How is your LED grow going?

Here is this LED UFO I got off of ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300431542948&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_10484wt_1027.
Has anyone heard about this one? It doesnt have any brand name on the unit but the seller is WFPTECH. Its strange because in the description it says it has 80 red and 10 blue LEDS, but when I got it and first plugged it in I was surprised that it also had 5 white and 4 orange LEDS also. I'm starting to think its a knock off now because I went to the sellers store and all his items are shown with PHP currency(Philippine peso) and also the brand of LEDs, Precision red LEDs from High Power Opto (Taiwan company).

I just got back on the forums today, and I had not seen that post until now, in my email. The plants are still flowering believe it or not. The LEDs really set them back, but I'm not complaining too much, the colas are getting huge. I still have all fresh growth, no signs of ripening yet. Trichs out the ying yang, all or mostly clear. I've had to stake a few of the colas, which is kinda rare for Bubble Gum from what I have read. I moved one outside because of room concerns and it is doing well too. They are under a super 600 watt hps lamp with an air cookled reflector. I even bought spare bulbs and still spent less than the LEDs. Growing in a Jardin now, 4x4x7. Some of my amazing macro photos are posted in the 600 club thread. I'll post one here, with the understanding that this is a LED thread. This plant spent most of it's life on strict LED only light.

Hiya Miracle Stash, just saw your post, this kinda answers you too. The leds were sold on eBay. I'm running a 600 now. The pics are recent, the two flash shots are for looking at trichs. These plants have been flowering now, 600 and LED combined, over 9 weeks now. I thought I'd be smoking some by Thanksgiving, but maybe not. :(

I'm currently germing two seeds in rapid rooters and getting ready for my waterfarm grows. Should I post a journal?

This very touchy subject because not all LED are created equally. Also some claim certain spectrum and penetration based on other people research they mimic'd and use to create there LED. I think your gonna get what you pay for but I'm still suprised that most people dont break down there Lumens per Square foot. Based on several books and much research you need to have atleast 50lumens per square foot or thing will slow.

I recently stumbled across the Kessil LEDS which has changed some consdierations for me with LED's. I have come to realize that 1w-3w LEDs are most likely to work because of heat dispersal and how LED's work the rest are most likely crap. Also many LED manufacturers have a different mixture of LED colors/spectrums and different reflectors that really effect how the LED light spectrum is spread and determines how strong LED is.

So when you ask how high should i hang my LED you prolly need to contact the manufacturer as some LED are going to be hung a different heights. For example Kessil recommends 6 h150 LED for a 4x4 area or atleast 4 on a light mover, while another company might have a similiar product but there lens has been design so 36' is optimal.

Best of Luck.

Not all LED are created Equal check out DICON manufacturing and Kessil LEDS.

The light intensity data on this >>>> PAGE <<<< indicates that the suggested height to hang a Kessil light is 12 to 18 inches.

I hang mine at 40cm (about 16 inch) above the plants which gives a light "footprint" of about 52cm, if necessary I can raise them a bit more and still have decent light intensity.

Knowing the exact angle of focus is definitely helpful in maximising the available light.

I have this little diagram in my grow area for quick reference.

Damn those are some nice looking plants!!, how long have you had the hps on them for? ? If only LED could produce that.. Hell ya make a journal!! I thought u did a great job in that other one.

They flowered under LED for about 6.5 weeks and have been under the hps for about 2.

Strange, it was your grow that swayed my thinking towards LEDs, so in fact you have definitely promoted "the cause" for LED growers.
Your situation changed and you adjusted accordingly.
Thank you for understanding and not holding a grudge as to my choice of grow lights. I have high hopes for LED lighting, and believe some of the stuff out there is on the edge. Those Kessil lights are freakin awesome!! In going to a hid system, I had to spend money on a tent and move out of my closet, get a vortex fan, an air cooled hood and more. I've always promoted LED growing as an alternative with some great benefits. My only reason for switching is personal and I have only told a couple of friends on here what is going on.

I saw the traitor comment and was like "wtf?" LOL I still despise commies and the VC! ;)

What spectrum(s) are orange filling? They use orange because they are cheaper than pure white LEDs which are more efficient in providing the mid range spectrums. I've read orange is a no no.
Orange is useless part of the spectrum until it gets into the redorange band, according to the graphs I've seen. I'd rather have warm white than orange.

Glad they are getting big for you, but too bad you didn't stick with the original plan of going all LED on the first grow :( I wanted to see what those HTG units could do on their own in a closet grow. You gotta do what you gotta do though
