Whats good everyone, Silas here, new to the site and to forums and im loving every moment.. I have another post where i am receiving pretty good help from a couple people, but the more info the better so ill ask a quesiton or two on here. I have my initial grow room researched down, i just would like a little input on my base soil.

Im not rich so i would like something affordable and effective.. I will be potting about 5 plants in a small closet with a 400w hps lamp with mh conversion for veg cycle. Ill be using Fox Farms Trio Nutes and hopefully all will go well.

Soil.
I am aware that there is a world of options for starting soils, and i gather that Potting Mix, Perlite, Sand, and Organic/Pre-Mix are my basic necessities.
I was recommended Fox Farms Ocean Forest Potting soil, which has guano and other various in-soil nutes, then another suggested to add FF Light Warrior to that mix because the Ocean Forest Soil was "known to burn plants." I suppose if it is not a risk with the Light Warrior added ill just go with that combo. But i was originally going to manually make a Soil Mix with Miracle Grow and various individual products (Bat Guano and Organic Seafood/Fish Fertilizer). What is your opinion on these products? (Fox Farms and Micracle Grow Soils) Does anyone suggest anything different? I am planning to make all my purchases this week so i need something of a final checklist in this area of items for my project.

your overdoing it. go to walmart and get some regular soil. never miracle grow soil. take your regular soil and give a good blend of soil and some native dirt (i like to go 50/50 ratio with native dirt and soil) but whatever you like. plant your seeds. grow for one month. add nutes. plant blows up and you dont burn or lockout

Here you go this recipe will do good for you. It is for a 3 gallon pot and should carry you from start to finish.

You may have to add some organic bloom fertilizer depending on how long they take to flower

Also no worries with PH with this mix.

I am using the same mix and my plants love it

16 cups soil foxfarm Ocean forest potting soil

32 cups Premier peat moss

2 tablespoon MG bone meal

2 tablespoon MG Blood Meal

14 cups perlite

2 tablespoon dolomite lime or 1 tablespoon if you are using promix/sunshine mix #4

Best soils to use are fox farms, roots organics, black gold etc. If you do make your own soil mix do NOT use miracle grow. It's crap. If you want to mix up your own mix just use Subcools super soil recipe. All nutes are in the mix just water till harvest. Personally i've been an organic soil grower for some time and am probably going to switch to coco coir because of the increased yields.

So it seems that I am torn between (1st)BioBizz, (2nd)Black Gold, and (3rd)Fox Farms. When i pick these compounds, which all seem to have nurtrients added, am i still expected to feed my plants liquid nutrients, or will they be well fed from the soil?

I use a mixture of FF happy frog, earthworm castings, and perlite. 3 parts happy frog, 1 part earthworm, 1 part perlite. All three bags should cost you about 65$ together. Each 20 #s . Mix it right you will have enough mix for what you need and some for the next run eaisly. Depending on the size pot you should be feeding with nutes about a month to month and a half into veg and all through flower. Best of luck. Stay green

These bagged soils have enough nutes for 1 month or so. After that you must feed them.

If you want the ability to just water the plants without adding nutes you have to mix up what is called a super soil mix. Subcool's recipe is the one to use.:leaf:

You can't go wrong with Fox Farm Ocean Forest--Not only did my plants grow very well using this, it even helped fix problems caused by other crappy soil when i transplanted them into it. But be sure to listen to everyone when they say to wait to give the plants nutes; it's tempting to give fertilize asap but WAIT to add any nutes for about 3-4 weeks then introduce the nutes at 1/2 strength gradually increasing to full strength
