Well, I think a plant grows most of it's roots out in the first few weeks of it's life. You notice how your top growth goes slow for awhile then all of a sudden BOOM it's takes off like a mofo. Those slow days are when the shit is happening under the soil and once it has a root system to sustain lush growth the vegetation starts..
By the time you are ready to switch to flower your root system should be well established and not trying to grow as much as the plant is trying to strengthen branches and shit..
I don't think re-potting a plant that is converting into flower mode is going to make it switch it's effort into making more roots, at least not enough to slow down stretching. But this is all my opinion and I might not know what the hell I'm talking about at all...
If you want to control stretch why not just use a MH for the first few weeks of flower?
