Light intensity needs vary thru life stages?

Here's what I'm thinking; The Rev swears by raising the lights up at the end of flowering to allow for greater ranges of flavor & smell expressions. Makes sense to me as this would mimic natural outdoor conditions with the intensity of the sun lessening in relation to seasonal change in nature. So, apart from the obvious "don't slam new clones under a 1k bulb" kinda advice, does anyone know of any other advantages to variations in light intensity that promote better growth? Like, building up in intensity to peak at the 3 week period prior to ripening, when you would begin decreasing intensity...? Or am i just high, and it's best to have max light all the way up to ripening stage? any thoughts?
