Light stopped working. Ballast or bulb?

I woke up this morning and my 600 wasnt lit, but my 400 was. The ballast has power, its internal fan is on, but its cold, and no light. Can I test it with a volt meter or does it need a bulb plugged in?

If your handy with tools , unplug the ballast from hydro, take off the lid and check to make sure there there is no swelling of the capacitors inside and the transformer isnt burnt, but from what you describe it sounds as if the bulb has failed, (ie: cold transformer but fan is on, and I am assuming it is a MH light, if HPS it could be the igniter inside the ballast is gone .. but cant tell you for sure without looking at the insides) i dont recommend checking the output with a meter unless you know exactly what you are doing .. very high pulse voltage!!

I just stuck my 400 watt bulb in the 600 ballast, even though ive read not to. It lit right up. Defective bulb, 5 months old.

It is. Its the generic one from HTG. I called them this morning and theyre gonna send me a new one. In the mean time, I found a local hydro shop that just opened and he gave me a decent deal on a digilux.
