Lighting Set-Up Question: Choosing between Mars Hydro 300W (x4) vs Mars Hydro 600W (x2) in a 4x4x7

Hey guys got referred here from reddit's Microgrowery.

Basically getting a 4'x4'x7' grow tent and planning on putting in LED lightings instead of the traditional HPS system.

I was going to do a DIY COB build but since its my first time growing, I figured I should just start with pre-built setup.

I have my eyes on the Mars Hydro systems.

Here are the two setups I am looking at

The First one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2PCS-Mars-Hydro-300W-Led-Grow-Light-Full-Spectrum-Hydroponic-Veg-Flower-140-Watt-/370961986470?hash=item565f0eb3a6:g:NJMAAOSwLnBX65BY (x2)

That's four Mars Hydro 300W LEDs generating 560 True Watts and claims to generate 1200W

The Second one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2PCS-Mars-Hydro-600-Led-Grow-Lights-Full-Spectrum-Lamp-Veg-Flower-For-Plant-278W-/370979032568?hash=item566012cdf8:g:3Y0AAOSw8w1X65C7

Thats two Mars Hydro 600W LEDs generating 556 True Watts and claims to generate 1200W

Would the first setup be viable with (4x) Mars Hydro 300W LED in a 4x4x7'? The reason I am leaning towards the first option is because I heard the Mars Hydro 600W LEDs generate a lot of heat and that two of them generate the same heat as a 1000W HPS setup. So I'm wondering if 4 of the smaller 300W LEDs would generate less heat. Also in case one light fails I'll have 3 more as backup and if one were to go out during veg/bloom I wouldn't be totally fucked.

The second option was originally my first choice but people are telling me it generates too much heat and that I should either get the 300W LEDS or the Reflector series from Mars Hydro.

Finally, is there any way I can add more Mars Hydro LED lights without making the tent's temperature shoot up? I am really trying to get an LED setup that is similar or a little less better than a traditional 1000W setup and people are telling me to build my own DIY COB setup if I want as good a yield as a 1000W HPS but today was my first day researching DIY COBs and while I am familiar with most parts (COB bulbs, heatsinks, drivers) and vocab, but I think it would take me another week to fully understand it. So I guess what I am asking is, is there any way to make Mars Hydro Set-ups to generate as much power as a traditional 1000W HPS

Thanks in advance guys!

No way never. Keep on with the cobs imo. I'm glad these guys saved me frome going blurple lol. Check out timber sounds a good fit for u timbergrowlights.com or cutter pre set kits ;) slap em together and ya cooking with crisco

Everyone keeps telling me this :D I've checked out the timbergrowlights setups, a bit out of my price range. Basically, I live in SoCal, and don't want my power bill to be some ridiculous amount with a traditional 1000W HPS setup, but for the yield it produces I just don't see another way besides a DIY COB setup.

At this point you think I should just get a 1000W HPS setup?

Reflector Hood: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019HOIOKW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1OKQR6K61KBEK

Total Cost: $369.31

Will that Hood work? Girl at my local hydroponics store said XXXL hood might burn the plants in a 4'x4'x7' and is less effective than an X-L hood (no idea what this meant, basically saying it spreads the light less evenly.

I guess now my options for the grow tent I have in mind is either this 1000W HPS setup or a pre-built COB kit that costs almost more than double the HPS system OR build my own COB setup (0 experience growing, 0 experience building anything, 0 experience with electrical work)

I started to get cobs for a 2×4 tent I was going to get so I already have 4 heat sinks and ideal holders. I'm thinking I'll need 8 more of each. Run 12 1818 citizens at 50-55w that's 600w hid to 600w cob. I haven't got farther than that as I have few months bongsmilie pipe dreams 3000k as for drivers I'm the same as you and have a hard time wrapping my head around t all:wall:

I highly doubt this statement. I have two of the 600's in a 2.5'x4'x5' grow tent and i can control the temps easy with a 4 inch 190 cfm inline fan as long as the outside ambient tempature stays around 70F. The do produce heat although and can raise grow tent temps by 30 degrees in just a short while without ventilation. I am in no way telling you to buy them because i am switching over to cobs for efficiency but they can and do grow decent plants for their cost. You also will find on this forum that the Mars LED's are frowned upon. I grow with them for the time being and have for 11 months now and they have performed for what they are. I can average 1/2 a pound with two plants under the two of them so not the best efficiency for G/watt but they can yield some pretty good bud for a personal grower. I agree with a lot of the people that prefer cob lighting but the start up costs can be spendy.

Basically its my first day researching COBs, if possible can someone outline the parts that would generate about the same as a 1000W HPS setup for around $400 that would be awesome.

Ahahaha :D Learned so much from reddit's Microgrowery this past week. I came here to further my learning xD

Growthers don't let growthers buy blurple LED.

Yes, Mars Hydro lights run hot asf. That's personal experience talking.

You want COB LED in 3000K color temperature. Look at about 25-35W/sq ft. They'll cut way down on your HVAC requirements, as well.

Not only will you get more yield per watt, your quality will be better. Noticeably better, even amateurs will be able to tell. This might be the best reason to swallow hard, dig deep and get yourself the right lights for the job.

Oh, and you can thank me again every six months for not having to fork over yet more money on HID replacement lamps.

Just go with as many COBs as you can afford now. This will will give you a chance to see how well they work. I have run them as low as 23 watts per square foot, with good results.

heres a setup that would beat an HPS with zero bulb cost going forward:
930 cob watts
131 lm/W
120000 lm
$480

Thanks for the info! I can easily say I have a better mastery of COB Setups after watching and writing detailed notes on the first three Growmau5 videos. I have some personal life stuff happening this week so going to have to postpone this research til about Thursday. Basically have gotten some confidence into how I can customize a setup and am familiar with the vocab now (voltage, amperage/current, 1 amp = 1000 milliamp, FV, Ohm's Law, etc)

Ahaha I have been convinced now to build a COB setup! Can't wait to get started. I will do a detailed report once I finalize the parts for the setup and get ready to install. By far my favorite new hobby in a long ass time! Haven't been this excited to understand scientific shit in my whole life xD
