Lil Rosie's first grow...

Hello everyone, long time reader, recent member, and now new grower. :) I have lovingly read and re-read many things from ROSEMAN and SAYWORD. They are my inspiration.

My grow: Top to Bottom

Lights: Two CFL in a 10" dome. They are currently set on a timer for 20/4. I bought them at home depot for about $10 each.

The babies are grown in rock-wool cubes (that have been soaked in pH 7 for 24 hours) after they sprout out in paper towels. I usually transfer them to rock-wool when the root is over 1/2 an inch long.

The rock-wool cubes are then put into my bubbleponics system. I use a 3.5 gallon black bucket, An air pump aerates the water with a 2 inch air stone. A submersible pump brings water to both of my net-pots with the use of a splitter. I have the hoses anchored in the bottom of the pots with hydroton. The water barely touches the bottom of the rockwool. The rockwool is moist to the touch constantly.

Nutrients: I'm using CNS17 Grow 3-2-4 with 15ml grow/4l water. I'll be increasing it by 5ml every week with the solution change.

I'll try to post new pics and updates daily as my little ones grow.

I placed two seeds in paper towels under a bowl on a plate and placed them in the cabinet above my fridge. The warmth from the fridge keeps the shelf nice and toasty.

08/04/09
Checked the seeds. Seed #1 has a small shoot just breaking the shell, seed #2 has not changed. Will check again in 24hrs.

08/05/09
Seed #1 now has a tail almost an inch long. Seed #2 has not changed. Placed seed #1 into rock-wool that had been soaked in Ph 7 for the last 24 hours. I gently peeled a thin layer of rock-wool from the bottom of the cube and placed it over the seed to keep it in partial darkness. I placed the seed under the dual cfl grow lights in closet.

08/06/09
Seed #2 in cabinet has not changed. Placed another seed inside (#3) to get another going. Seed #1 is now called “A”. A has grown almost an inch overnight. The first and second leaves are out. The third and fourth leaves are just beginning. I transplanted the rock-wool cube into the hydroton in my bubbleponics setup. (See picture #1)

08/07/09
Seed #2 has not changed. Seed #3 has a small shoot showing. Will check again in 24 hours.
A has fully sprouted the 3rd and 4th leaves. Aww… it’s so cute! (See picture #2)

08/08/09
Seed #2 has not changed. Seed #3 has sprouted an inch long root. Transplanted it into rock-wool cube and placed with A in grow room. Same setup as before.
I keep my seeds that I transplant into rock-wool in a glass Tupperware dish with a soda bottle cut in half for a dome, and a plastic shower cap wrapped around it to maintain moisture. They stay in that until they are at least an inch tall, then I transplant them into the hydroton bubbleponic system. You can see the Tupperware in the background of picture #3.
A is looking good. It's 3rd and 4th leaves are even bigger! I can't believe how big it's getting already! (See picture #3)

Thanks for reading! Update tomorrow...

P.S. I'm not sure exactly what I'm growing. It's just bag seed from a friend. If this grow goes well, I'll order some awesome seeds and have a better idea what I'm doing by then.
I'm going to have to go back to Home Depot to refresh my memory on the brand, wattage, and lumen output for my CFl's. If I'm remembering correctly, the box said it had a 9k lumen output per bulb, but the more I read - the more I'm thinking I got that wrong. I'll double check, then list the brand, price, and correct stats.

Seed #1 is dead. Seed #3 is now B. A has sprouted it’s 5th and 6th leaves and is a little over an inch tall. B is about ½ an inch tall and has just lost it’s shell. It looks a little groggy, but I expect that it will look just like A did on day 3 in a few hours.

Thanks for the support guys! It makes me happy to see posts on my thread. Any feedback you guys can give would be really helpful too.

A and B are doing great. A’s leaves are pretty much evened out. B is progressing nicely at a week old today.
I was reading a lot into LST and FIM last night. I think the LST that wraps the plant around the outside edge of the container would be awesome, but I really don’t want to extend the grow time. FIM seems like a better idea. I need to top eventually anyways, because I can’t let them get too tall - 5’ tops.
Does anyone know just how tall the plants usually get? I know that if left to their own madness in the wild, they can grow into a tree! But, indoors, it won't get taller than me, will it? What's the best way to control height and have a decent crop? LST? FIM? eeee....

Even indoors a plant can get out of control quick. I would do more reading on topping/fimming and super cropping cause they all have there advantages. For all of them it will delay progress for a bit but then you get a nice bush and not a huge stalk. Your yield will do better as well.

Keep us updated on this grow!!! they are looking good!!!!!!

A & B are great. B’s 2nd set of leaves are growing nicely. A’s 3rd set of leaves have sprouted their own little leaves! Now there is one big one, and two little ones on the 3rd and 4th major leaves! Yey!
I added another 43watt (200 watt equivalent) bulb to the setup. You can see it in the picture. I figured out that the other two were 43watt (200 watt equivalent) bulbs. The box claims they have a 9k lumen output each. So, if that's true, then I've got about 27k lumens running right now. Does that sound wrong to anyone else? They are loving the C.Fl’s. though... I've never seen such fast growth except for in Roseman's gallery.
I’ve got guys coming in today to do the windows. I’m not happy about it. I don’t want them in my apartment. If feels like an invasion of privacy. But, they community is paying for brand new windows for all the units, so… I’ll deal with it. I wonder if having the lights off for 2 - 3 hours is going to hurt the babies right in the middle of their cycle…
I'm definitely reading more into FIM and LST. I think I'm going to move the babies into a bigger closet when it's blooming time. I'd like to save my little closet I have them in now for growing and clones. I also have a little cabinet (12"X12"X48")I originally had setup for growing and clones, but it wasn't big enough to hold the 3.5 gallon bubbleponics setup. Maybe that would be good for clones and seedlings...advice?

A has roots showing outside the basket!!! B is right on track. They’re both doing fine.
Today we did a full water/nute change. That was a first. I was so worried about hurting A’s new roots. But, now they’re up to 20mL of nutes per 4L of water. I put about 6L of water in the 3.5 gallon bucket. Today, I also changed their light schedule. They’re now on 18/6 whereas before they were on 20/4. I’ll be changing the water/nutes and lights again in two weeks. Eee...! So excited...

Hahaha…I need to start moving the light to take pictures of A. It’s too big now to fit in the camera lens…lol. B is doing great too. I opened up the bottom to check the roots (making sure I didn’t damage them yesterday) and woah! A AND B have roots!!! A’s are all fuzzy looking, and B just has one long ass one that is looking for the water. I’m a happy mama. :-P

A has some little leaves showing in the crook of the 3rd and 4th leaves and main stem. I wonder what those are going to grow into...

Take a look at the leaf structure on A & B. If you look at how the leaves are designed, you can tell that they don't look the same. A's veins go straight out to the edge of the leaf and B's kinda curve!

Is this any indication of sex? I thought I had two of the same strain of seeds... but now I'm starting to think not. I know that finding out the strain is really hard, but if the difference between like "northern lights" and "white widow" are indicative when they're this young, maybe it wouldn't be so hard...

I'm going to go and stalk some pictures and see if I can find a 10-13 day old picture of some of the popular strands and see if I can guess what I have...

Yup, this is my first one. :) It's been so simple so far. I don't even have a pH monitor or a thermometer. I was just kinda winging it. I'm one of those people, that if I know too much, I try to use ALL my knowledge and usually I end up killing what I'm focusing on. LOL...
