Look at my DIY plan :)

Don't really know what this kind on setup is called, but here is some info.
I'm using a bed roller as flowtank (it is seethrough right now, but I will light-secure it) I've drawn it in paint! :b

The idea is to make 4 holes in the top for net pots (what size would you recommend? I was thinking 2" pots)
And as you can see my plan is to split up the water flow to get more even water level in the tank..

Does it look good? :)

5 gallon buckets would be preferred. Shared reservoir has many drawbacks. Tangled roots can slow growth. If root rot sets into one plant, you could end up losing multiple plants. In my opinion, grab 4, 5 gallon buckets, a decent air pump with a few splitters, an air stone each 5 gallon bucket, and put the waterline just below the netted pots. They will reach for the water quick enough, until then you can spray them a few times a day to help. I think you would be much happier with the results of this setup. My current setup is 5 plants all in the same rez and I will definitely be switching to 5 gal buckets next grow.

Edit - To answer your question, yes, the air stone is needed because your roots need oxygen. Since we submerge them in water they don't get much of it unless we find a way to supplement them. Thankfully air stones are cheap, and they sell splitters at wal mart :D

I have grown some monsters in totes sorta like that. I just put two 8" net pot in the top of a ~45gallon tote. Fill that tote half full of water and use a pond pump to mist root area with 360ez-cloner sprayer heads. I also keep an air stone inside the tote. By using the air stone and pump in a certain orientation inside the tote I was able to avoid the roots going into the pump and clogging the sprayers. The true beauty of this design is even if the sprays do get clogged or the pump just fails the roots still have a nice oxygen rich supply of water at their disposal.

Your way will work im sure but your creating more stuff than you really need to get the job done. The air in the water is something I would suggest no matter your system to promote good bacteria growth and inhibit bad bacteria growth.

I have moved away from this kinda setup since it is real time consuming if you got more than a few totes setup, but to grow in just one tote would be fine.
I have my last two totes going right now, 4 plants total ~6weeks into flower. You can check it out in my journal linked in my signature.
Good day mate

I don't know that it's neccesarily a lot of work. Changing out your reservoirs once a week, making sure your plants/roots aren't showing symptoms daily and your air pump is still working (it always is..). It takes maybe a few minutes a day then you spend maybe 30 mins a week changing your rez. If anything.....use DWC for how easy it is. Not the opposite.
