ok, well let me explain.

There are some small grows where CFLs will do better - at the same lumens - than HPS, due to coverage and the ability to put the lights close to the canopy. This is a fact.

While without the dimensions of the cabinet I am unable to really offer an opinion, just saying that HPS will always beat CFLs is both untrue and a surefire way to get anyone who believes in CFLs to be offended and/or irritated.

yeah alright..but i would prefer a hid for the same watts not the equivalent watts..i would use a 150 hps to veg rather than use a 150 watts of cfl.if u use a cooltube you can put the hid as close as cfls without burning.i did see acouple of succesful grows with cfls, but they all end up with airy buds and wish nthey wouldve used a small h.i.d. whether it was mh or hps...im notgonna say dont use cfls but if you are gonna buy cfls and be at 150 watts or over than you should just get another h.i.d.

it really depends on the width to height ratio of the cab. A 150W HPS would get worse results in a short, wide cabinet like a or 3x3x3 than equivalent lumens, and maybe even equivalent watts. It just can't cover the area.

On the other hand, if you had a 2x2x4, the HPS would definitely be the way to go.

Trust me, I only use MH and HPS, but I've seen some very nice CFL grows. It's just about getting lots of high-power bulbs. None of these 13W and 26W pieces of shit. And yes, they can produce dense nugs.

In general, I would agree that for anything over 200 or 250W, you have to go HID. Even 250W is pushing it, but for short and wide grows - like a short SOG for example - it could still be advantageous. HID still can't be as close as CFLs, even with a cooltube. They produce direct IR radiation that can't be pulled away with ventilation. Putting your hand under a CFL and an HID in a cooltube is a way to see this for yourself. The reason is of course that the HID puts out more from a single source, rather than distributed.

Well i know that i can keep 12-42w cfls cooler than i can keep 1 400w hps. Thats what works for me, but i know the HID guys for some reason get all uncomfortable around cfls. And i have seen a lot of grows where the buds werent fluffy and people were completly pleased. I dont know maybe you should research some more

Also when your 150hps blows, you have to go spend the money on another immediately. If one of my cfls blows i still have plently opf light in there and i can go up tp home depot and have it replaced for free. Hey free bulbs for 9yrs, yea ill take that.

actually i use a 400 watt hps and i have the standard bulb,ho hortilux 55,000 lumen bulb and mh conversion 38,000 lumen bulb...so if 1 bulb blow its nothing to get replaced on the spot and call the company i bought it from.... free replacement bulbs for a year.....thats about the time to change the bulb for any hid.so you grow with your cfls and ill grow with my h.i.d. and we see who has what....

200w CFL takes about 75-80% less electricity than it gives light. So 200w CFL electric consuption would be about 150w/h.

Oooh, that's a tough call. Probably HPS, just for the fact you'll get 16k vs. <10k lumens. Check out the link in my sig. about CFL/HPS 16k lumens for just such a comparison of light coverage. I would probably throw in a few 42W CFLs in there, because the HPS alone isn't as much light as I would prefer to flower with. If you use the ones you veg with (cool white), you'll also round out the spectrum.

That is nice to get CFLs for free, but for how infrequently HPS bulbs blow, I don't really think that would even register for me as a deciding factor.

While I have not measured this, I have a very very hard time believing this. The light bulb companies work very hard to get their efficiencies as high as possible, and a 20-25% apparent increase in efficiency I'm confident they would report. I have an ammeter around here somewhere, so I'll check this myself.

fuck me sideways ive been away for 24hrs and what i knew would happen has happened has happened why cant growers agree that there are too many different ways to go to argue who is right and wrong lol

i am an experienced grower but a change in circumstances means i had to sell up all my gear, 1000w hps in parabolic shades, which just about left me in tears so this time around im going cheap as chips for maximum yeild lol thats the theory anyway, no im quietly confident!!

i grow in canna coco and over the years perfected it so i know i can grow the shit out the plants!!#

the plants are lowryder2 x ak47 so there short girls anyways only grow to 12-14" so cfls would be great i think, think i will go for 2 red spectrum with a couple daylight bulbs around them, i will either be doing 3 or 5 depends how greedy i get when i go for it lol prob 5!!!!!

as for my box size i havnt made it yet so skys the limit really so any suggestions are welcome,i will be doing 12ltr pots

lol i was having a hard time understanding some of these posts lol then i rolled up, made much more sense then u bunch of stoners lol

That video didnt really prove anything. Watts are watts, amps are amps. A 400w hps will pull the same as 400w CFL. People must get confused by the power saving on the front. You save 75% based on the standard incandescent bulb. As far as i know CFL's dint break Ohms Law. But maybe i got it wrong

Yes, but if the bulb has a lumen rating at 125W, you're not getting the same lumen output at 80W, so actually you're getting hosed.

There are absolutely no details given: measured voltage or amps, bulb type, or how that all is connected. You can either believe whatever stoner happens to be doing that experiment (under the mysterious conditions of the experiment), or the companies that manufacture the bulbs and have every reason to hope that their bulbs only consume 75% of the power they rated the bulbs at. I think I'll take the manufacturers, thank you.

Hmmm, That video should be longer. When you put that lamp on...it doesn't give you the maximum light, is it? ...It takes a while(warms up or smth). So here's my question: Is it possible that it takes less electricity when you put it on and more when it has warmed up and gives you the maximum light?
