I am starting to understand all this lighting stuff but obviously have a lot to learn still. However I really like the idea of fluorescents opposed to HID's mainly because of heat build up. I just wish there was a way to use them efficiently... So in my quest I pose the following question...
Using CFL's and/or linear T-5's could someone grow effectively if combining them with the use Solatubes? I read on another post that the Solatubes block out 99% of the UV's.
Is this an avenue anyone has tried? Does it make sense? Does the plant need the suns UV's or would the Solatube help boost the fluorescents to a level where they can effectively work for flowering? I'd be interested in hearing anyones thoughts. Also the other advantage could be that solatubes can be purchased with exhaust fans built in.
if i was you id try to keep your plants close and do lot of pruning but its do-able
Qeustion- for flowering... is a 400 watt red sprectrum hps better then a 600 watt multispectrum hps??
I bought a few 26 watt cfls ( 100 watt equiv?)and a few of those helmet looking clip on tin utility light fixtures, all cheap, today. I added one to the 400 hps flower closet. I have 2 warm and 2 cool flo 4 footers in my veggie station. maybe I can incorporate a couple helmets in there to rev it up. I appreciate the beginning pages of this thread. I think many who participate in these forums are aware of induction lighting.
And we're open to "new" technologies.
One of the main problems to converting our lighting practices to induction lights that you failed to mention is the cost of buying these lighting systems.
Amortized over the claimed 100,00 hours makes them seem inexpensive in the long run, but the initial cost is way too much for the time being.
Only early adopters with deep pockets will be buying this technology anytime soon.
I have a friend who works for the local electric company
He rides down your street and automatically reads all meters on your street
He says if one house is pulling alot more electric than others then he has to report it
because theres a chance you might be growing.
Now my question is with my 400 hps and my fans and pumps along with my everyday electricity usage
will one of these meter reading dick beaters blow the whistle on me?
A 400W grow isn't all that much to worry about. With all the added peripherals that is equivelant to only 3 150W incandescent bulbs in table lamps. Nothing to worry about.
