Making a Pc Grow box or Wooden box without fans? How will that turn out?

Im starting to build my first wooden grow box with 4 23 watt CFL. The box is from a Montes Alpha wine box wooden. It was a pain to install to lights because the wood is so stong and the inside will be painted white.

Tell me - FANS - really needed?

yup they are needed. you have to be able to get even just a small amount of fresh air in and the plants really need some movement of air around them. look into a couple small used computer fans. I havent used them but they seem pretty popular amongst the micro growers i know. that, and even with cfls, heat will become an issue. good luck

With 92 watts, you could TRY drilling some holes in the top of the box and on the sides at the very bottom. The hot air off the lights will rise out of the holes and cool air will get sucked into through the bottom holes. Im not sure if this would be enough ventilation however.

If your struggling with cutting a hole in it,drill loads of 4mm holes 3 mm apart in a 12cm diameter circle, then screw a pc fan to the inside of the box so it pushes the air out of the holes. I have this done on top of a wardrobe and its keeping 150w of cfl cool enough. I also have a black foam ontop of the holes to stop visible light escape although this does reduce the airflow.

How thick is this wood ?

I tried running two 23w and two 26w lights in my veg 17x20 by 30 tall (all in inches) with nearly a 120mm size hole at top and a big intake and easily over heat. With a 120mm fan rated 79cfm running off a 5v .7a wallwart I'm running 4 degrees or so over ambient, which in my case is already 80 degrees.
