Male Cannabis as a Houseplant

I just want to keep it around as a houseplant and not have it taking up valuable grow space.

Will it do ok on just ambient/window light? How much (intensity-wise; not time-wise) light would it need to fill in for the short days in winter to keep it from flowering? One of those clip-on, as-seen-on-tv grow lights? A table lamp? A nightlight?

Thanks for any input.

how big do you want to keep it? i think you can look at bonsai technique.

ime you can keep a cannabis plant fairly small and it can survive on 10w of led bulb and regular root pruning and fresh soil every 2-3 months.

Funny you should say that. I was just talking to the ole lady about going bonsai with it. Probably a bit late, as it's around 4 feet tall, but I thought about lollypopping it to make it tree-like.

I'm less worried about size...actually, it'd be kind of cool to have a 10-foot-tall plant in the corner...I'm more interesting in keeping it healthy outside of the controlled grow environment and keeping it from flowering.

I think I'll just play around with it and toss it if it doesn't do well. I have other house plants, so I just wanted a more unique plant to keep as decoration.

If it doesn't flower, there's obviously no worries about seeds. I actually took a cutting to sex it a while back. I took pollen from that one and put it in the freezer for later. I just want to keep this around as a curiosity more than anything. I've never tried to keep one as a normal houseplant and was curious if it was feasible.

If you allow it to drop its pollen all over , you will not be able to control pollination on any fems you are growing .
It takes very little ….. whether it’s on you , clothes , whatever. It can easily be pushed around by air , even subtle .

Kill it.
Buy a fern.

Just give it 18+ hours of light. You don't need an expensive light just keep it light for 18 hours a day. I've revegged males and kept them around for quite awhile and then flowered them again. I don't understand all the "Kill It" stuff. Male cannabis plants are nothing to be afraid of. It's not hard to keep them isolated when they are dropping pollen to prevent any unwanted pollination of other plants.

It's possible to do what you want to do. Good luck.

Once it's mature it will make sacks and drop pollen regardless of light cycle so you will end up with pollen throughout your house.

Better to keep a female as a houseplant imo, I have a few.

I popped 20 seeds 3x this fall, 70% males. All same seeds from same mom and dad, some start dropping pollen at 5 weeks running 18/6 light, the rest shortly after. As soon as you see those pods forming, you've got pollen.

If it produces any quantity of pollen it will pollinate any female plant within a good radius of it. Taking pollen and doing a controlled pollination is one thing, leaving a male plant to flower at random is another. Three experienced growers have told you the same thing, it is up to you.

I reckon it's a moot point now, as I didn't care much for the shape once I pruned it down. It went into the compost pile.

I was under the impression that a photoperiod plant would not produce mature flowers under 18/6. This plant certainly didn't have anything beyond the tiniest of preflowers.

I've a male clone in veg. Been in veg state for about 6 months now.
Under 24 hour light. It sits in corner of clone/veg area with little light in a very small pot.
The original male seed plant done it's business and produced pollen. It took a while to revert back to veg state.
It got too big so I cloned it. No male flowers have appeared on the clone.

That is an auto trait that is not desirable for breeding. If a male is sent into flowering and the does not revert back to veg when the light is back to 18/6 it is not something you want to use for breeding.
This is a pretty common technique when selecting males for breeding. I do this with all males before selecting a male.

I have seen what a single male in a outdoors greenhouse did to an indoor grow. Unless you are breeding and know what you are doing, they aren't worth the bother. If you want to keep a cannabis plant as a house plant, then plant a cheap feminised seed or take a clone of a female.

I love the irony of the way noobs come on to forums seeking advice, then argue with the advice given.

I dont see why you couldn't. I would probably go with something more clone sized than a 4ft plant, it seems like a larger one would be harder to keep healthy. I would keep it in a main living area if possible so you have lights on at night and to just keep an eye on it. Stick it in a sunny window, another reason to go with a smaller one.

If you get some seeds you get some seeds.

It just seems like a liability. it will never produce any bud, it could contaminate your bud. unless you want to breed seed, it just seems a liability. but i mean some people like cucumbers better pickled, different strokes and all..

It’s totally safe to keep males around. If you’re worried about it keep it away from your flower room. As long as they don’t get root bound and have enough light hours(veg) they won’t produce flowers. If they do produce flowers just pull them off before they open. Even if they do release pollen just mist it with water and it doesn’t spread. I start flowering my males in my flower room then pull them out when the balls start to dangle(about the release pollen) and just let them hangout in my living room or bedroom until they drop pollen. I’ve never had an accidental pollination and I’ve been doing this for a few years.
