Malted barley

I'm just using the bran right now, but I have made bokashi compost and I'm using it on my outdoor garden. Also, I'm not sure how much soil you are running because that will determine if making your own 'kashi is worth it or not. I usually have to mix up 250gal at a time, so I make my 'kashi 10gal at a time. For making the bran, I found this old bucket that pool chemicals came in. It's a nice sturdy bucket and it's been empty for a few years before I found it, so no chem smell at all.

Anyways, here is a link to my homemade grokashi. I was about to make more, so I can update this thread.

So would this be the end product that you make (or similar, at least)?

https://www.amazon.ca/Bokashi-PlusTM-Culture-Mix-Kg/dp/B015Y0R4DQ/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=74698108136558&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=bokashi+plus&qid=1558387438&s=gateway&sr=8-2

I am only making about 75 gallons of soil, and I intend to do no-till. Would it be good to buy this and add it to my soil when I cook it? If so, how much, and should I still add malted barley? Thanks again for the help!

I'm kind of at a loss at what to say. I added bokashi to my soil because I had plenty of it, but I would say that my plants responded well to it. I use rabbit manure compost and everyone is going to have different results from the compost. If you want to try it out, just make sure that you keep enough 'kashi to top-dress with. Barley, I add it my soil and as a top-dressing. Barley has chitinase, which breaks down chitin(crustacean).

Yeah I just seem to be getting two different definitions for “Bokashi”.

One being the Bokashi bran that you add to food scraps, etc.

And the other being the end result of using the Bokashi bran with the food scraps.

Was just confused which it is you add to your soil/worm bin.

I'm only using the bran for everything. Like I said though, I'm buying wheat bran 25gal/$14 and using expanded EM1 $35/5gal. I also had to buy the carboy jugs/airlock and molasses. It was def a good buy. The 'kashi bran will keep your worm bin warm all winter long. I had snow and ice piled on my tarp, but it was steaming warm when I opened it. However, it turned into a mouse hotel.

My neighbor has a bunch of plastic pallets, so I traded him some weed for them.

The book that I read about this said that it is redundant putting the bokashi food scraps in the worm bin. They said that the 'kashi compost has more enzymes and you should just use it in the corner of a garden or the bottom of a pot and cover with dirt. It sounds interesting, but I was cutting trees down to make room for a garden and I had a tree bounce back at my leg. It was a smaller tree, but it still busted up my leg. I just know to not be mind-numbing stoned next time. I was more worried about dropping the tree on my dogs. Anyways, that's why I'm on the computer this week. I have some bokashi compost to use in my garden and plants to plant, but I had to take the week off.

Ok, thanks. I think I read somewhere it is hard to get that EM1 in Canada, but I'll look into it.
Would you say the store bought stuff is comparable? I know its more expensive, but I probably don't need much.

And damn, sucks about the leg. Hope you've got some strong herb though!

It can get confusing, it's all pretty much the same, just both liquid and dry versions of the same Efficient Microbes like EM1.

The EM1 is a concentrate and should be 'expanded'/activated (AEM). Even a small bottle will expand to several gallons of AEM.

Just use this when a liquid is more called for.

Bokashi bran, Growkashi and such are just, bran, rice hulls, meals, coffee grounds, even newspaper! As long as it's organic and somewhat absorbent.

It is simply well moistened with expanded EM1, mostly sealed up and left alone while it ferments. When done most air dry the mix. Whatever the base used it's totally infused/infected with all the efficient microbes. I'll keep some sealed and moist, mainly for the worms. What gets dried goes in soil mixes, top dresses, whatever. The microbes simply go dormant till some moisture wakes them up and boom!

Stang is really giving you good advice with the whole EM/Bokashi thing. Simply beneficial bacteria with every use, and it really does make a difference. Been using it for over 7 years now.

@MustangStudFarm MAN! I've never seen your plants look so good! Shit does really work doesen't it?
Easy to make, Easy to use and ... CHEAP!

Good going man, I mean it.

Wet

Also make ~10 gallons at a pop, 5 moist, 5 dried.

Well, I’ll look into the EM1, but it seems uber expensive in Canada! But it seems the advice is to make my own, and then like you said, I can use different types of bran.

Thanks for the advice, guys! For now I may just buy a bag, probably better than nothing, right?

Its been a struggle to get here! Hyroot led me to using Grokashi/SIP and I don't think that I'll look back. I feel dumb that I didn't want to believe him at first and it took convincing... I've been adding greensand, azomite, and a very small amount of Mn sulfate to the bran. However, I read that it is better to add Mn to woody compost, so the humic acid will chelate Mn. I'll get there soon with my worm bin, which is going a lot faster now.

How are things going for you? I was trying to clear room for a bigger garden and a small tree bounce back into my leg. I really wanted to start an outdoor mmj grow next to my veggies, but I had to take time off. 1st year of being legal in Okla.
