Matt Gaetz Tweets 'Defund The FBI' Then Deletes It Amid FBI Probe
Representative Matt Gaetz called for the FBI to be defunded by Democrats in a tweet on Wednesday, and then deleted it immediately.
"If Democrats want to defund the police, they should start with the FBI," the tweet read.
Newsweek has reached out to Rep. Gaetz's team for comment but did not hear back by publication time. It is unclear why Gaetz deleted the tweet a minute after posting it.
The Florida congressman is currently being investigated by the FBI for allegations that he violated sex trafficking laws and allegedly paid a 17-year-old to have sex with him, The New York Times first reported back in late March. Gaetz has denied these allegations and has not been charged.
"I'm being falsely accused of exchanging money for naughty favors," Gaetz said to the Republican crowd at the Ohio Political Summit in May, according to NBC News.
Joel Greenberg, a friend of the congressman, pled guilty in May to charges of sex trafficking, producing a false identification document, conspiracy, identity theft, stalking, and wire fraud. As a part of the plea agreement, Greenberg admitted to paying an underage girl for sex. He mentioned that he introduced her to other men, but did not name them, Newsweek reported in May.
"Greenberg also introduced the Minor to other adult men, who engaged in commercial sex acts with the Minor," the plea deal said.

Gaetz, who is reportedly being investigated for child sex trafficking, spent $25,000 campaign funds on "legal consulting."
"Gaetz's latest filing shows that he paid the sum to attorney Marc Fernich, who lists among his 'notable clients' the accused child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman Loera, and convicted crime family boss John 'Junior' Gotti," Business Insider reports.
That was not the only expenditure that appears related to the Republican's scandals. Gaetz also paid $25,0000 to the law firm Zuckerman Spaeder, LLP. And he paid $825,000 to Harlan Hill's Logan Circle Group, which has been leading damage control following the child sex trafficking reports.
ABC News reporter Will Steakin noted that Gaetz paid $20,000 to an LLC linked to Roger Stone.
In April, The Daily Beast reported that Gaetz wingman Joel Greenberg wrote a confession letter to Stone in an effort to receive a pardon from then-President Donald Trump.
"On more than one occasion, this individual was involved in sexual activities with several of the other girls, the congressman from Florida's 1st Congressional District and myself," Greenberg wrote. "From time to time, gas money or gifts, rent or partial tuition payments were made to several of these girls, including the individual who was not yet 18. I did see the acts occur firsthand and Venmo transactions, Cash App or other payments were made to these girls on behalf of the Congressman."
Greenberg reportedly offered Stone $250,000 in Bitcoin to obtain a pardon. The pair were not pardoned and Greenberg pleaded guilty to six criminal counts -- sex trafficking of a child, production of a false document, aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, stalking and conspiracy to commit an offense against the U.S.

The conservative duo convened a “Free Speech Peaceful Protest” outside Riverside City Hall, where a crowd of more than 100 people gathered while holding Greene and Gaetz signs, according to The Press-Enterprise.
"We won’t back down,” Greene told supporters on Saturday.
“And here’s what we’re going to do, America. You’ve got two members of Congress right here and we refuse to be canceled because we won’t let you be canceled,” she added, according to The Press-Enterprise.
Gaetz sounded a similar note, vowing to fight back against the cancelation of the rallies.
“They may try to cancel us online. They may try to pursue us in real life. They may try to shut down our venues. But we will take this fight to them in the courts, in the halls of Congress and if necessary, in the streets!” he said to the crowd.
“Do you know why they’re so afraid of Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene? Because we fight for you, not them,” the Florida lawmaker added.
The demonstration came after three California venues that were slated to hold “America First” rallies canceled their plans amid concerns over safety and the divisiveness of the lawmakers.
The most recent cancelation came on Saturday. when the city of Anaheim announced that a venue had canceled the event less than 10 hours before it was scheduled to begin, according to the Orange County Register.
“We as a city shared our public safety concerns with the operator and the operator shares the concerns,” Anaheim spokesman Mike Lyster said, according to the Orange County Register.
