quick question since you pointed this out about going off heat from driver ... i was running (4) cxb3590's on hs 5.866 42'' ..my heat dissipation for the cob was 88..now do i need to add the dissipation of the driver also to that for a total of 100..if i was planning on mounting to the hs heatsink also... i was gonna run it passive and already received basically evrying bu tddnt tai that into account ..with my calculation with that extra heat from the driver i can no longer do this unless i mount it elsewhere ..bc passive is 100x17=1700 and the hs is 42x40.31=1693As GG pointed out, it's identical to cobs ...
eg. : HLG drivers efficiency is maximum 93-94%, the 6-7% is dissipated as heat ..
So a HLG-185H-C @94% efficiency, if maxed out (@200W) has 6% of 200W heat loss.
=> 12W of heat.
If you plan to attach your driver onto the heatsink : You should take into account that 12W of heat.
For passive cooling add 120cm² of heatsink per heat W, so 1440cm² for the previous example.
For active cooling, add 40cm² x 12 = 480cm².
Of course, drivers do have some dissipating power too (varies according to design ..), so this might be a little overkill, but I like to stay on the safe side.

i really like how mauss has his made pretty much thinking same concept as in design i went with same width but 42 " long heat sinks 5 of them will have some cut of pieces 3500 k and 6500 k top bin from jerry 42.50 a piece and 5 HGL 185 drivers for 1000 watt set up
already have aluminum angle iron to frame it all up so 1000 watts of cob power in 5 x 5 area should do well ??

I did 4 CXB3590 @50W apiece per module, and 4 such modules per 4' x 6' trellis. That's 800W for a very similar area. What would be the actual effective difference between these two in terms of average irradiance across the canopy?Good to see you're making progress on the build. Why not just do 5 rows of 4? Those extra two cobs on the outside would bug me. Or just do 18. 900w at 56% efficient is going to be crazy bright, over 500 par watts.

I haven't checked and I'm not sure about how you are calculating surface area, but if you are correct about having 1693/1700 of what is recommended, than yeah, you're definitely fine.so in your opinion i should be good and if i was to choose not to grab grommets i should be fine

Not much in theory. It's about 12% less wattage but when you factor in phototropic efficiency the difference should be a bit less. Still, 5-10% increase on a grow bordering 1000w is no small potatoes, space considered. Could lead into the "what is the best PPFD" argument. i was gonna run each driver attached to each hs...so 4 cobs and driver to one hs..are you running one like this now ??? i mean that is my plan more or less but having a plate made so driver is not sitting right on heat sink causing more heat to my center cobs thinking 2 - 3 " inch gap from driver to heat sink
just want to make sure or do it like maus and run all drivers on a panel out side of room but again i am concerned about resistance or distance from driver to light source if it effects like having a 100 foot extension cord running power saw compared to 4' cord
