I was thinking about getting 'Tzer aheen mernem, Tzer vakheem mernem" on my fore arm. Their lines from a Serj song called Yes it's genocide. Pay homage to the Armenians and Jews and kind of a reminder to me of the oppressed people of the world.
It's armenian, which translates to I want to die for your terror, I want to die for your fear.

Yes, if you don't know what it means, and your just going by what your told. Might get a Chinese symbol for "love" and it really is "slut" lol

Around 1983-84, there was a fashion trend among adolescent males. Thankfully it was brief.
You couldn't walk past an arcade, miniature golf course, movie theater, or shopping mall without seeing hordes of teenage boys wearing parachute pants, bandannas, and sleeveless tee shirts with Asian characters on them.
I suppose they were emulating the hair bands they saw on MTV or something, but they looked like tools.
How I used to fuck with them.
I would ask them if they knew what the characters on their cool shirts meant. Of course they didn't know.
I would tell them all sorts of bullshit. "It says you like boys." "It says you have a wet pussy."

Heheh, I have seen some Kanji tattoos that were real bad, most of the people are walking around w/ "dumb american" or "idiot" on their bodies and dont even know it....I check w/ a friend in Japan before I tattoo ANY kanji.

Just to throw in my .02 . One thing I hate is guys with sleeves and neck tattoos and nothing else.. Like under the shirt is nothing but blank skin and yet they choose to cover their forearms and neck.. It use to be that you went to those areas after you ran out of space on your body. They know that too and want to give the illusion that they have a suit or something and that makes me start the question why they have them at all. Is this for you or do you just want to be fashionable and have people look at you? I have more then a few and all of them are personal to me and have more meaning to me then they could to anyone else. I think a lot of people have it backwards now. </rant>
As for safe and how long they last... just like a car, it's about how you care for it and how you drive it.
You don't have to go balls out but do your homework and pick a good artist that's been around for a while and pay the price. You're going to have it for the rest of your life so invest well. Think long term.. is this fashion or is this something from your soul? I work the art, print it, and have it on the wall or something for months before I even think of committing to it..

I agree with what was previously said about reading the bible and writing down any quotes that stand out to you. After that put the quote somewhere you'll see it frequently to see if you get sick of it or not.
When you go to check out tattooists ask to see their folios. They all have them and its your chance to see if you like their work/style.
If you have any doubt what so ever (and doubt is different to nerves) then don't do it!!! I have a lot of tattoos and learnt that one the hard way.
If/when you do go through with it though have fun and enjoy every aspect of the process
