IME, pH swings only occur during mid-flower on to harvest. Why?

Many are unaware that plants excrete waste products through their roots. Mid-flower on is the time when the plant is building buds, consequently, the chemistry of the waste goes bat-shit crazy

The more volume in the rez the more tolerant it is of the toxic waste.

This grow I decided to experiment with 3g pails, which I could only put <2g of nutes due to 6" depth if the net pot lid. HD 5g pails are some 8" taller and should be the minimum volume wise, but my tent is only 5ft tall, so height is at a premium

pH and ppms were crazy to deal with. Plant had to be removed every 2 days to adjust ph/ppms= a RPITA

All future grows will be with my HH 2.0 Spray Rings using outboard rez.

I like to keep the water cool, which I believe promotes an all around better environment within the res and have read countless articles and books that have proven the benefits of keeping the res water at a cooler temp, not cold, just around 65, I can get it damn near 45 if I were to leave my coolant pump running, the glycol in the cooling system can maintain a few degrees below freezing if I wanted it too.
It is at a humble 38 degrees and I can get 25 gallons of 75 degree water down to 65 in a bit over an hour. Warm water and the naturally high humidity inside the res., coupled with the nutes and additives, can get sour quickly if left to sit in such an environment without cooling, fresh air and agitation.

I hope to have a chiller by the end of the year and do away with the freezer/glycol setup I have now. I have a few 6' pieces of 1/2" 304 s/s pipe and I am going to have a buddy of mine make me a better cooling coil ( more surface area ) out of it and weld it all up right, same design as the one I use now.

I set my ph down to 5.8 when I mix, 3 days later and it goes up 1 point, 2 more days and it is the same. I use tap water (set out for at least 4 days) it is 170-190ppm at 7.8 to 8.1. I water once every 4 hours for 30 seconds and get 10-15% runoff at 5.9 to 6.1 is the highest I have ever seen in the waste water. I change my res every 5 days on average, but it will go 7 in an emergency. I just start feeling uneasy about chem nutes sitting mixed any more than 6 days in any environment, but that is just me.....lol

I have a long way to go in learning to grow, but I have my growing environment dialed in pretty darn tight. Temp, humidity and all timing needs are never an issue, just learning to read the plants is the hardest part for me.

Say ASV, how are you doing?

You are right on about the res temps. The smallest amount of light and water above 75 degrees is a recipe for disaster. Algae is destand to grow leading to root rot and it,s down hill from there.

Doing Great M8, the plants are now poking up through the trellis, so I am going to flip them Saturday night, they will wake up Sunday morning about 6 hours later and to a hps bulb.

I will throw some pics up later tonight when I get home. They are showing a few nice white pistils on the main line nodes, so they are all female, hell, they better be for what they charge for them...lol

Evening All,

Just got done with training the Ladies a bit more, they will be through the trellis in 2 days at this rate and the little CT will be right at it. I am soooooooooo ready to see a different glow in the room...lol
I trimmed a few of the lower do nothing foliage to allow a bit more airflow, it is getting a bit too busy, have to curb some of the lower growth.

Morning All,

I am sitting here baked outa my gourd and took a few pics of the grow. I am ready to take the young Ladies on into Motherhood. I have some really healthy bottom branches, that are a bit to far down for the trellis ( popcorn fodder), so I am going to take a couple of clones off of each Cotton Candy and couple off the Ice Bomb and see if I can get them to take. The CT is doing all it can to catch up, it will hit the trellis in a couple of more days. I am shutting them down an hour earlier tonight, change the bulb and my control sequence to flower and its on.

I started with the canna boost and have the ppm at a hair under 900 and away we go. Going to transplant the CSS mother and J23 mother into 1gal pots today as well.

Hey...looking slick sir!!! I am trying out an ebb and flow setup for the first time. I am using 3 coco containers and the rest are rockwool, It is becoming increasingly obvious that I don't know shit about ebb and flow...Do you know much about ebb and flow?

I have read on the technique, but I have only this method and hand watering experience to draw from. Wish I did. I will more than likely stay away from reusing nutes ( as in ebb, or dwc styles of growing ) After about 5 days, I lose a lot of faith in chem. nutes. For the last 2 weeks, every Wednesday, the last feeding of the day is triple "on" time, meaning 1.5 minutes and that is to help curb out the weeks salt build up, I get solid straight runoff for the last 45 seconds and I ph the last bit of runoff that leaves the plants and it is always 5.9-6.0, so until that changes, I will roll with that.

E & F with rock wool, or any medium that retains most of the nutes between feedings, is a disaster waiting to happen. My DIY HydroHalo Spray Ring system (now in 2.0 form) promotes the best aspects with none of the problems. Come take a look in my drain to waste thread

That sounds like the way to go......just build a setup that mirrors my coco technique. You are top watering on raised containers? Runoff stays underneath? Your shit is gonna explode......love to watch it.

Runoff returns to outboard rez. Lots of pics, so go have some fun

I am about to change the res out for the 3rd time in flower, I am going to make adjustments immediately but where do you see the disaster......I wanna get crackin on that first

Off the cuff, here's one that pretty much goes unnoticed, and unrecognized as the cause: salts can/will/do build up in mediums, some are much harder than others to flush. This can cause nutrient lockout, and/or over ferting

I have 1 feeding in the middle of the week that goes for 3 times the normal run time, I get about 45 seconds of good runoff. I have been doing this for the last 2 weeks and everything seems to be going well. I know there is a fine line somewhere out there, I have not found it, but I am somewhere in the ballpark anyway...lol

I know if you feed just a bit, say till 10-20% run off, you will indeed build up salts , but if you do a respectable rinse once a week, even with the current level of nutes you are running, you can still drag a lot of the unwanted leftovers with it.

Probably why many go soil-less, or as I do hydro. Makes flushing a lot more effective

I flushed out the rockwool with a light nutrient solution and a sterilizing agent, diluted my res and going to run a week long sterile res with no organic material. Thanks, I really need help.

Evening All,

Finished all the trimming and managed to pull about 12 clones in all, will see who makes it. Transplanted the J23 and the CSS into 1 gallon pots. Changed all my programming to flower mode and away we go.
I was surprised to see Lord Vader in the grow room, I hope he uses some of that force shit on the grow. Lil' Bud and his partner are very happy and gave me the thumbs up to swap bulbs and go 12/12.

I never did like those jiffy pot things for cloning. I currently use 2"x2" rockwool cubes & i have had 100% success rate with clones & rockwool. I soak the cubes in sensi A&B 250ppm & superthrive for a day then I cut my clones, dip the stem in clonex & into the cubes. I throw the dome lid on for about 3-4 days. Then I mix the same solution but add your favorite beneficials at 1/2 strength. by day 7 the roots are exploding out of the bottom of the cubes:bigjoint:bongsmilie
