Mechanic thread....

Still, they used crap rings, I rebuild mine at 300 000km

Funny that toyota loves the big bore short stroke design yet they used those carbon magnet oil rings. I had to tear down my highlander 3mzfe last year because i had some crazy ass oil consumption and it still showed compression at operating temp! Bad luck for me, i only had 127,xxx during the time.

Long story short, cyl 2 & 5 had its oil ring stuck in the landing so deep it had a gap between the landing and the wall. I had to rebuild most of the bottom end and it took me almost a month lol. I've never seen that happen before

The 17 year old Tacoma is running fine after my low budget tuneup! :hump:
  • New battery
  • Oil change
  • Fresh gas + a bottle of heet
  • Aired up tires
Oil still looks good and it hasn't leaked any coolant.
I was thinking about a back-flush but it might start leaking again. Maybe just drain & refill the radiator? What do you guys think?

I scuffed the sidewall of one of a set of 4 off-road tires and need to replace it.

When is it too late to introduce a new tire to the rotation? They are about a bit less than 1/3 used but are 5+ years old.

If the tires are within the diameter recommended by the manufacturer of your vehicle then it should be ok. (For my car it's like 3/16")

If it isn't then you can get the tread on the new tire shaved down to match the other three.

If it's just for very low speed off-roading it should be ok. The problem is that going to and coming home from your trail spot on the highway will cause a lot of wear on the drivetrain because that one wheel will be spinning slower than the rest of your tires. That can cause expensive parts to break.

The Jeep has lockers, would not be able to use the lockers on that axle, so 2 new tires. This was the easiest way to deal with it.
I read 1/2 inch difference in a 33 inch tire will cause trouble
Expensive skuff.

20 yr. old low mileage Olds tech4 engine kept flashing ETS off light. That's traction control.

Put on old diagnostic computer and EVAP comes up.

where this connects was out, pushed back in. Now, I still get ETS off light once in a while until I turn the green knob and it goes away.

Am I fucking up?

Is the brake fluid low? I got the traction control light to go away on a GMC envoy by adding a lil juice. Changed the brakes the next weekend.

I'm using an aftermarket 4 barrel carb on my 460 big block and it's lacking a kickdown lever attachment bracket for the C6 transmission. Should I just go without the passing gear or should I try to make a bracket of some kind that either attaches to the carb or is manually activated some how? Maybe something like the manual choke system I'm going to have to install?

Thanks in advance Mr. Dr. Proffessor. Sunshine.

Yeah just let water run through till it comes out clean. FIll and drive around a bit, drain till it runs clear and fill with antifreeze and distilled water.

I used a radiator flush and it made my heater core leak. Now I can;t turn on the heater without it leaking and stinking the car up with antifreeze. It's a complete dash and steering wheel off job to replace the heater core.

Thanks, that's what I figured. My heater core had been leaking, but maybe all of this time idle has helped. We shall see...

Ive noticed that many of you are having car trouble. Tell me about the problems your car is experiencing and I'll tell you how to fix it.

Trust me, I'm mexican..

ok i got one
2005 baja
hard cover over the trunk and a flip gate that folds back into the trunk when not used (when u got the gate down it makes flatbad shape)

the key no longer unlocks the hard cover i am pretty sure the spring or rod that was attached is not anymore .....and with the flip gate thing crawling tho the access hole that the inside has to trunk is not possible to get to where the rods are to pull to make the lid open

got to open the lid to fix the lid but no way to get to the rods to open the lid (to make the gate on the car go down u need to open lid)

who else but me would get fucked like that ......so know a fix that does not invold break up the hard top and replacing it/going without

Locksmith?
Worst case: they have to drill it out & replace the lock.
