I'd much rather they completely legalize it and tax it....
That state is broke. That is good tax money to be had right there.
That is a bit of a big jump, Marijuana is an EXTREMELY controversial issue. Although I think that after the meeting we have gotten some good media coverage on it and I think that will help with educating the public ALOT. Here is a copy of an E-mail I got from Noah Mamber the Legislative Analyst for MPP.
Thank you very much to everyone who came out today to attend and to testify as to why medical marijuana legislation with compassion centers is necessary in Iowa. We have been working with Senator Bolkcom, and so it was excited to see these efforts come to fruition with such an great gathering of patient and advocate support for Iowan patients' rights.
While SF 293 did not immediately get recommended out to the full committee (where it would have died until next year), the result was a great success. Our sponsor and his two colleagues, both of whom have indicated support for MMJ in the past, recommended that it stay in subcommittee pending a "perfecting amendment". After the subcommittee comes up with its amendments, which Karen O'Keefe and I will try to affect positively, there will be another subcommittee meeting, perhaps next week, where everyone can come out again, and we can continue to get good media coverage, and you can educate the Iowan populace on the need for this bill. At that meeting, hopefully, the bill will pass out of subcommittee, and then we can use it to educate members from now until next winter, when we will all push to get it out of committee and onto the Senate floor for a vote.
The meeting itself was great, and there were at least 14 patients and advocates and a doctor testifying, and no one testified against the bill, though concerns were raised. There was great press coverage, covering a lot of the compelling stories of our patient brothers and sisters. I have heard from several people that Lisa Jackson did a really bangup job, so special congratulations to her on her first foray into public speaking. And thanks to Jeff Elton for helping me coordinate, and being our eyes and ears on the ground.
So that we can coordinate even more efficiently for next time, if you are a patient or a doctor on this list, please send me an email with your name, phone number, condition/medical specialty, and zip code/state Senator and hopefully we can pack the meeting even more next time.
Again, thanks to all of you that showed up, you did a great job, and it showed in the excellent press coverage, one example of which was the following:

I am happy to see that this may in fact go somewhere this time!!!!!!
