No. There's a simple straight forward answer.

(MV) MERCURY VAPOUR LAMPS - The oldest member of the HID family, mercury vapour lamps work by arcing electricity through mercury vapour. While more efficient than incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps, mercury vapour lamps are the least effective of the entire HID family. This, combined with an improper colour spectrum for horticultural applications, makes mercury vapour lamps a poor choice for a grow light.

Before hps and mh people did use the vapour as a choice to grow, but now being past the year 2000 things have moved on and its been realised that the vapour lamp is not effective enough to be used realisticly within a grow environment and also they are a fire hazard within a grow room.

Stay with the flourescents...your plants will thank you in the long run.

On the subject of mercury vapor, if I remember correctly, don't they have something radioactive in the ballast portion of the fixture, or am I thinking about sodium vapor lights??
