Smoking weed was the only thing that kept me off heroin in Vietnam. Almost everybody did drugs on R&R in the rear. You could buy mj from the local's, but I could get temple balls & ThaiStix from our supply sgt...I've been a medicinal user ever since I came home.

There's a lot of baggage that comes with the territory. Remember soldiers are trained to kill, first & foremost. Everything else is secondary. Rape went way up as they expanded women rolls in the military. There were hardly any women in the Army when I was in. They are everywhere now......

Mexico has lots of excellent surf. I have many miles and years exploring the peninsula. I have had a few scary incidents but I'm still here.
and renta viccis in La Paz is very accomodating...
When I would come back to the US I would have a sense of sorrow that I was leaving Mexico but happy to be home. I would go south and stay for 6 months at a time. The culture south of the border, by south I mean at least 300 miles, is very different compared to Mexican culture north of the border. It is very easy to get used to but can be appaulling at times.
Nevertheless, I love baja and it's culture. I never been to mainland Mexico but after experiencing baja I don't need to. What can I say, when you grow up 3 miles from the border Mexican culture becomes a part of you.

I have a saying I made up while I was crossing the border to head south one day:
"When you cross the border into Mexico you lose a lot of rights but gain a lot of freedom." It was the best way I could describe it to people that have never been there.

Scorpion Bay...that would be my home for 1 month surfing all of the points. Then to La Paz for a month for fishing, diving, repairs, safety, and a mellow night life. I would work on sailboats in the harbor to make money to finance more exploring (there were 4 of us). I could have stayed and no one would ever know.
Funny observation: I could get plenty of work in baja fixing boats (engines) and Mexicans wouldn't get mad that I was taking their jobs. Why? There were no good mechanics! I was fixing boat engines off of federaly issued pangas. This position would get me the hook up in town.
Get 3 or 4 ballenas and head out for a day of fishing and exploring and enjoy life. Shit, I'm nastalgic..good times.

I have never surfed todos santos because it generally goes off in the winter. I have been out there before but there is no way I would get in that water. It's deep, clear, cold and teaming with seals. Where there are seals there are sharks and you can see them. fuuuuuuccckkk that....

For many years we would drive down Baja for vacations. Camp & fish all up & down mex1. Lobster diving was the best. It's just too dangerous to do what we used to do. 4 wheel drive for miles to get to beaches on both sides. It was great fun, but I wouldn't attempt it today....

Psh, I feel safer down here than I did in most places I ever lived in Merica. Tijuana and Juarez are dangerous, but just drive right through, there is nothing dangerous about traveling, especially in BCS. La Paz has really grown.
