Just startd going with a mate of mine, our town is pretty old and full of ancient ruins etc so lots about

Found a nice tucked away spot just outside the abbey walls,my first ever bit of digging and I found 2 different sized lead loom weights, some old blacksmith nails,a really crude medieval looking flower that looks like it was a pin broach, and just sitting on the ground I spotted an 1898 queen victoria penny!

Messed up thing was the big signal we hadn't blanked out properly.. dug 2feet into the solid ground for a fckin redbull tin!!

had an Garret Ace 250 few years back found a few cool things one was a pot leaf with some turquoise in it... think one of my step sons may have it now

some other stuff I found and kept minus all the clad I found...

the broach was the only thing that had any sort of info on it and it was e.p gold..

does collecting gold, silver, aluminum ,copper, palladium count? if so then yes, I've detected a good coin shop near the center of town, another in the city who just deals in straight bullion. fantastic hobby.

I'm more of a rock-hound myself, got a pretty mad mineral/crystal collection, everything from Quartz to Opal and even one insanely wicked Blue Spinner sapphire. Once a collection starts, it is only a matter of time before it needs it's own room!

I've thought about doing this. I've read on a few forums that some areas are becoming more restrictive about allowing you to detect. My thoughts were more about beach/surf edge detecting. Haven't got as far as purchasing any equipment yet.

We have a programme on TV called American digger where he travels throughout America with his son and colleagues and metal detectors finding things from the past, he's found old guns, coins, moonshine equipment and even a cannon. Mind you some of the owners of the property's he digs at are not very friendly but he sells what he finds and splits it with them its very interesting.

1861 half penny found today, half on the surface again.. I think we've found some waist ground that used to be abbey farmland, really stoney but looks to have been plowed and used for crop. Its nicely tucked out the way.. got me thinking;D
