so there is a difference then,,,,a mh on its own is not as good as a hps for flowering!blue light incourages good leaf growth and red light incourages flower growth so red light is important for flowering!yes you can flower with a mh but yeild will be smaller.....
 
yes there is a difference between using a single bulb for the whole grow. you have to weigh the costs vs. the differences and the only way you'll know is through experience.
 
We need a basic electrics thread. Too many people are starting fires by poor wiring jobs. If you set your house on fire you will get busted!! And electrocution is fun too! These kits are great if you know how to use them.I build all my own ballasts, and wire my grow room myself, but I took a course in electrical wiring at trade school and am confident in my skills. Be careful out there.

Buds got bigger not as dense. No loss on yield just personal depends what your growing as well 400watts of any HID will give you the same amount of bud if you feed them right want be as dense though but thats not a bad thing friend groes his rhino and kushberry with just mh because it smokes better in joints. Its personal prefrence no lose on yield though.

there was a "Ask Your Electronic Questions Here" thread for awhile. Absolutely agree with being careful with electricity. Saving money is great - but to save 50 bucks at the risk of burning your house down.... seems shortsighted somehow :mrgreen:
 
Remember jamica has some of the best weed and they lack spectrum in the outdoor lighting yet grow some of the bigest best plants? If the lights their and the foods their the buds will be their. Mixxed spectrum helsp because they are tricking the plant that their is more light then their is.

I hope you aren't saying the Sun has a different spectrum in Jamaica.

The reason we use different spectrums is because no single light (yet) can replicate the Sun's spectrum. So we go with what helps the plant during its different cycles. The sun is not "more blue" in spring or "more red" in the fall. Ideally you'd use a dual-spectrum through the whole grow but that can be cost prohibitive.

Yes we do! I worked as a lighting tech at a live theatre for 5 years and had to learn all this stuff on the fly! Once that info is in your head though you have it forever. :peace:
 
Alright lets just dumb it down a bit haha

I got a HPS I can use this for Vegging (first stage)

I can go out and buy a MH light no problem what so ever just all I want to know is

Is it better to use a MH for Flowering if it is then thats what I'll do

I would be very interested in information you care to share. I know about things like the Sun and spectrums because I love astronomy (stars are classified partially by their spectrums) but would love a comprehensive, well thought out organized explanation of spectrum, lumens and how they influence plant growth.

as boooky points out - there is a lot of misinformation out there.

I dunno your prolly right..My adopted dad tought me with spectrum charts and said as long as every spectrum is taken care of the resaults would be the same. Lets say you got a 400watt hps with 2 blue pectrum cfls the results would be the same ass 400watt 3500k mh with warm spectrum cfls.

I am of the mind that whatever works for you is good. But i think when new folks ask these kinds of questions we focus on what is ideal or what is "best" and then we start getting bogged down.

I mean - hell you can grow with CFLs all the way through or HPS or MH - and all of them are better than none of them!

Wow there are so many different view on spectrum and lighting types, yet not real proof/results/science to prove any of them. let me take a little section out of a scientific journal:

"So what do spectrum and light color have to do with photosynthesis? A spectrum of light comprises the different-sized wavelengths that give the appearance of a variety of colors to the human eye. These wavelengths are important because plants absorb different colors of light in varying amounts for photosynthetic processes. Supplying your plants with these colors that they can absorb most readily and in high quantities assures better photosynthesis and thus more food for your plant, resulting in bigger yields and more resin production for super-potent pot."

So if you want to know what this is taking about take a look at the picture i provided, the first one shows the natural sun spectrum, the second one shows what best absorption nm (wavelength, aka color) for your plants. As you can see plants preform photosynthesis more efficient at these wavelengths (they process the light better, faster, and make more food for themselves) than at any other wavelength. So if your only providing the plants with a MH light for example, you are only providing half the spectrum for ideal growth , and you are NOT getting maximum yield.

Boooky: So there is advantages to using both MH and HPS in your grow.... hope you like this more than my other reply, as this is not mag/forum information, its scientific fact.
