i have a 400w hps and a 400w mh can i use both of them in my grow room. i got a few more plants and i wanna get them goin. i did grow under a mh before but the buds were small. i would just have to rotate right? but any help would be great... i could buy a conversion for a 100 but i could get a new hps system for 140. and ireally dont want to buy anything right now.

Not really sure what your question is. You use MH for veg and HPS for flower. If you have a few extra plants and don't think that your 400 MH will do them all at once, you can put you HPS in for veg, it just doesn't have as good of growth as a MH bulb. But you MH won't be able to really supplement you HPS when you put them all into flower, so I would suggest getting a higher watt bulb.

How many plants are you growing?

i have a 400watt mh and hps switchable ballist you can grow 2 to 3 plants might have to rotate them. but i heard 600watts is better. right now i have just 1 plant and it's growing good but jondog123 is right mh for vegging hps for flowering or you could use a hps light with blue spectrum called growlux i think hope it helps.

the answer is yes, yes and yes! the best lighting scheme uses both spectrums - just like the sun! so using MH and HPS simultaneously is as close to natural sunlight as we can get (from what i understand). i think using both kind of lighting throughout the entire grow isn't common for a few reasons:
1) cost
2) heat
3) it isn't necessary for an awesome grow

having said that - i use a dual-spectrum 1000w light (600 HPS and 400 MH) and love it.
