MH light height distance

Hello all,
I'm a new grower. I have a variable 1000W ballast and a MH bulb. I have 5 clones about 4" tall.
Currently the light is 18 inches away from the top of the plants. I have fans blowing in the room to help keep the temp down but its still 84 degrees around the plants.
Would I be better off reducing my watts to 600 and lowering the lights or keep the setup how it is?
Thanks!

I think that is what I'll do Genuity. That seems to make the most sense to me as well. Plus it will help with the heat in the room until I get an inline fan.

I just had a quick question,If there is not a proper exhaust in place, wouldn't a 600w light @ 12" and a 1000w @ 18" keep the canopy temps near the same.I only ask because the light chart that I can find doesn't have distances for the 600 MH so I can't really compare them as I have no experience with either wattage yet.Sorry OP not trying to thread jack just thought it would be useful for both of us.

I'm thinking it will keep the temp close to the same, but also enable the plants to grow at the same rate, but at a reduced cost.

I definitely plan to get an air cooled hood for sure. I guess what you mean by "gonna flower with" is that the lights will need to be much closer to the plants at flowering time, and light heat will even be more of an issue, right?
But yes, room vents and better a better hood is a must and will happen.
