MI and CO......The Reciprocity Laws

Hey everyone....I know this isn't a concrete place for legal advice, but I figured I'd try.

I have a question regarding obtaining a Michigan MMJ card. I recently moved from Colorado (5 wks ago). I have a valid, current CO Medical Marijuana card from that state. Based on my research I've done I know that MI has a reciprocity agreements with CO. What does that mean? Basically I can come to MI and use my CO card to walk into a dispensary and buy medicine. My goal is to get the MI card. But if my CO card is valid for a while longer, can I use it in the same manner as one would with a MI card? I do plan on cultivating my own medicine as I did in CO.

My question is do I have the same "coverage" as far as the laws here in Michigan if I do possess my card from CO? Also, would I be able to get an expedited path to get the MI card since I have the CO card and the state has the reciprocity law? Would I be umbrella'ed under the MI laws for growing with my CO card and the reciprocity laws ?

(j) A registry identification card, or its equivalent, that is issued under the laws of another state, district, territory, commonwealth, or insular possession of the United States that allows the medical use of marihuana by a visiting qualifying patient, or to allow a person to assist with a visiting qualifying patient's medical use of marihuana, shall have the same force and effect as a registry identification card issued by the department.

I am not sure if you have to adhere to michigans quantity laws (max 2.5 ounces) or if they honor your CO limits. To be safe I would say don't go over whichever is the most restrictive limit.

I did the same thing a little over a year ago. I emailed the state of Michigan MMMP to inquire about reciprocity. Most dispensaries are sketched if you don't have a Michigan ID to match your card. I have a CO ID and get hassled a lot. The MMMP told me that even though my CO card was still valid I needed to see a doctor and send in a new patient application for Michigan. You do not need a Michigan drivers license or ID...you can use an out of state ID/License/passport. Just need to match your name and date of birth from ID with your SSN. They only care that you have a Michigan mailing address on your application to the state, so they have a place to mail your card. You don't even have to get your application notarized like in CO. It's much easier to get and they have cashed both my new patient and renewal checks within 3 days of receiving. Hope this helps.

Similar to what Guy Incognito said: It IS legal, now whether the proprietors of the dispensary will believe you and sell medication to you will be a whole other thing. But as others have said as well, try and find out. It's not illegal, so it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.
